Does anyone know any exceptional safety schools? It seems like all the schools I love are really selective!!! I want a school that has a great academic reputation!
Stats? Academic interests? Budget? Do you need merit or will need based aid cover cost (discuss budget questions with your parents to be clear)? Geographic restrictions? Size preference? Athletics? Greek life? Quiet or rah rah? Rural, urban, or suburban?
I plan to pursue a pre-med track possibly a major in psychology or neuroscience. I have a 5.0 GPA strong extracurricular and service, several AP classes. I will need merit scholarships. Geography isn’t too important but I live in Florida but would like a school (if it were out of state) to have a high out-of-state percentage. Size isn’t too important to me either. I would like a schools with a balance between greek life, not a school where it rules the school. As far as the rural/urban/suburban I would like a school with a traditional campus but in an area with a downtown and plenty of out of school activities.
This online source lists a range of schools that would be suitable for your academic interests: “The Experts’ Choice: Colleges with Great Pre-med Programs.”
Do you have standardized test scores?
Any thoughts on UF, USF, FSU, or UCF?
For a school to be a “safety,” you must be CERTAIN that you have ALL costs covered by ASSURED merit/grants, family funds, and a $5500 student loan. If you’re not sure, then it’s NOT a safety. Safeties MUST be affordable!
How much will your parents pay each year? Ask them, please don’t guess. We see later posts from a lot of disappointed students who thought their parents would pay more.
You’re in Florida, so do you qualify for Bright Futures?

What are your test scores???
Do you have an ACT 30?
are you retesting?
In this thread you mention being premed. In other threads you mention wanting to attend tippy top schools. That would be a recipe for disaster for a premed with stats that aren’t tippy top for those schools. A premed shouldn’t be an average or weaker student at his school…he’ll get weeded out quickly.
Are you serious about med school? Or is it something you’re just thinking about?
I am not completely sure if I want to go to med school but I have time to decide that. I am planning to retest for ACT and SAT. I am not completely confident about getting into tippy-top schools so that’s why I am asking for safeties. I am confident I can get into the University of Florida which is a very good school for pre-med.

I love UF and am for sure applying there! Might check out FSU but not too crazy about it. UCF is too large for my taste and USF just doesn’t have name recognition. I want schools with good alumni connections for job networking

Yes I qualify for bright futures and I have Florida Pre-Paid college program.
So what were your SAT and ACT scores?

I am waiting to here back on my june sat scores but on the old SAT I got a 1960 and on the ACT (which I will take again) I got a 30.
On the Old SAT…what was your M+CR?
well my math and CR would be a 1230 but I am extremely confident I did way better than that on the New SAT which I took in June because my PSAT score (the new one which is similar to the new sat) was very high.
Typical true safeties for applicants with good stats are their in-state public schools (not always the flagship…) and less selective private schools.
I think for a school to possibly be considered a safety, from a stats standpoint the school needs to have an admissions rate above 40% (the higher, the safer) and your GPA and test scores should be above the 75th percentile.
You also should like the school and be able to afford it.
Many OOS public schools – many flagships and UCs come to mind – should not be considered safeties because the admit rate, even if it is above 40% overall, is very likely below 40% for OOS applicants. OOS admits tend to have better stats overall than their in-state classmates.

What is your PSAT? Will it be high enough to be a NMF?
I got a 1370 out of 1520 and I wil not know if it is NM till September but it is in the 99% tile I believe.
Can you see your exact percentiles from your score report? A 1370 would appear to be equivalent to the ~97th percentile.
@r4cheh What was your selection index score out of 228? The cutoff for NM commended was 209, so if you were above that, you have a chance at NM depending on your state cutoff. If you were below 209, you unfortunately do not qualify.
@BusyNapping how do you know the cutoff?..where does it say that? Because my selection index was a 208 and to miss it by 1 points sucks lol
