Hi,

I got a C in precalculus honors. If I got a 760 ish or higher on math II subject test, will that compensate for my C? This is the only C I have ever gotten in math and all my other grades are A's and B's. I'm looking into colleges with engineering focus (like university of michigan, university of wisconsin, northwestern, carnegie mellon and georgia tech. Northwestern is my top choice.)

Thanks.

Honestly, for an engineering major at any top 40 university, a C will almost never look good in any honors math course (even with a 760 on the SAT subject test).

Something like 15% of test takers get 800s. A 760 puts you in the 80th percentile, which is pretty decent. I would retake it asap (after preparing copiously).

I know a kid at my school who got into Berkeley as an Biology major, and he got a C in second semester honors pre-calc (but as a Sophomore). If you’re a sophomore, I recommend you go onto Calc bc, work your ass off, and get at least a B both semesters.

If you pull that 760 to an 800, have an SAT math score of 780<, and take the AMC and pass (no way, though. lol), that C can be overlooked; or, again, if you do well in bc as a Junior (so colleges could see it) or even make the universities pity you over a catastrophic event in your life that led you to getting a C.

Hopefully you still have above a 4.2, a 2250< on the SAT, and are a sophomore looking into bc for Northwestern, or any other prestigious university to not take you as a joke.
