Good medicine novels

i read most of these while in hospital, so now i'm recommending some:

How We Die by Sherwin Nuland*
How We Live by Sherwin Nuland
Complications by Atul Gawande*
The House of God by Samuel Shem
Becoming a Doctor by Melvin Konner
The Anatomy of Hope by Jerome Groopman
The Doctor's Plague by Sherwin Nuland
A Map of the Child by Darshak Sanghavi
Gifted Hands by Benjamin Carson
A Not Entirely Benign Procedure by Perri Klass
Second Opinions by Jerome Groopman
Learning to Play God by Robert Marion

*my favourites so far

what would you recommend?

Not a novel exactly or entirely devoted to medicine itself, but Stiff by Mary Roach is great!

I 2nd Gifted Hands! Such a good book! Ben Carson is amazing!
The Open Heart Surgery is good too by Dr. Lester Sauvage
and
Emergency Doctor by Edward Ziegler

lightfish,
Which one was your favorite? I've read that Complications and House of God were great. I think I might also read White Coat by Ellen L. Rothman.

Singular Intamices - Danielle OFri

oh yeah!! i've read White Coat and Singular Intimacies too. Singular Intmacies was great...I love how she describes everything so humanely. my mom took it from me to read so I forgot to list it.

whoknows - my favourite is definitely Complications and How We Die and also Singular Intimacies now that I remember hehe

The House of God freaked me out a little at first, because of its mind-manipulative nature.

Ahh- the House of God-------very funny read-----soooo true.

I'll definitely have to read Complications and House of God then! So many good books!

The Intern Blues is great too

good list:

http://www.amazon.com/gp/richpub/listmania/fullview/2ZSZDPIPGB8TT/104-1942093-3514323?%5Fencoding=UTF8

cool thanks for the list.

i found Intern Blues to be rather boring...probably because their recording style reflects a lot of their tiredness. so i never finished it.

When The Air Hits Your Brain by Frank Vertosick is also really good. one of my second level favourites.

Additionally, anything by Dr. Robin Cook are excellent. Almost all address some ethical dispute in the medical field today.

Some of them are:
Vital Signs
Coma
The Year of the Intern
Vector
Outbreak
Mutation
Mortal Fear
Harmful Intent

(I have read all of these, so I can attest to the fact that they are a great read.)

Also, if there are some topics in medicine that disturb you (cloning, mutations, genetics, conspiracy theories, you might need to stay away from some of these books.

While this one is about a groups of nurses instead of med students/doctors, I enjoyed " A Nurse's Story: life, death, and in-between in an intensive care unit", by Tilda Shalof.

some magazines that have cool medicine columns:

Discover (Vital Signs)
The New Yorker (Annals of Medicine)
Scientific American (only sometimes...but genetics is a really hot topic now in there)
The New York Times (Health section's CASES are awesome)

if anybody knows more... i'm interested hehe :D

i think Erich Segal's 'Doctors' is good... it shows the lives of 5 uber smart students of Harvard Medical School... and the horrors of med school...
