Good Mix of Engineering Schools

I’m a HS junior putting together my list for next year. I’m planning to major in engineering – not sure what type, possibly chemical. I don’t really care about region (I live on the east coast), but I don’t want the school to be in the boondocks. I’d like to try for a few top schools, but I want a good mix so that I’m not biting my nails at acceptance time. Oh, and I’m a white male and full-pay. I appreciate any advice.

My stats so far:

SAT 2: Math level II – 800, Chem – 780
I haven’t taken the SATs yet, but I’m shooting for 800 in math, low to mid 700s in CR. I’m also planning to the Physics SAT 2.

Junior year:
Independent study advanced calculus (I already completed AP Calc BC (5) last year)
AP Physics
AP US History
AP Statistics
AP Chemistry
Latin 4
Honors English
Studio art

Proposed senior year:
Hoping to take a college level math class (perhaps 2 classes) at a local college (Ivy)
AP English Literature
AP Bio
AP Virgil
History elective
Studio art

I received one high B in English honors last year, otherwise all As. Class rank/GPA: My school doesn’t rank, but I’m probably number one or two out of about 80 (private school, mid-level). I have the most rigorous courseload, by far, of anyone in my grade.

ECs: 2 varsity sports, lots of volunteer work in youth sports – coaching, referee, umpire. Math team captain and high scorer. AMC 10 top scorer for school last two years. National Science Olympiad silver medal. A few other clubs, academic teams, peer tutoring and misc. volunteering.

Hey there.
Great stats so far. You’re a very strong student. Couple of questions to guide recommendations:

What state do you live?

Do you prefer smaller, technical schools or bigger universities?

Reaches:
Caltech
Harvey Mudd
Rice University
Stanford
MIT
Cooper Union
Princeton

Matches:
Case Western Reserve
Cal Poly
USC
UW
UT Austin
Carnegie Mellon
Washington University in St. Louis

I don’t know about safeties. It depends on where you live.

Add to the previous list:

UC Berkeley
University Michigan, Ann Arbor
University of Illinois, Urbana-Champagne
RPI
Purdue
Cornell

I’m located in New England, so yes, my safeties should nearby. Generally, I’m biased towards the east coast, but if I got into Stanford, I’d probably go there, ha ha.

I’m not crazy about the highly technical schools that are 60/40 male-female. Also, I’m not interested in huge state schools with 40,000 students. I guess my preference is for a medium-sized school with 1,000-3,000 per class, with a mix of people and majors.

Where is Cooper Union?

I’ve heard good things about Rice.

Cooper Union, very selective, in NYC.

What about WPI in Worcester, MA?
RPI in Troy, NY

I checked and RPI and WPI are both over 70/30 male:female. I’m guessing a certain type of student likes this environment - a very technical type - this is probably not for me.

Carnegie Mellon University
Cornell University
Massachusetts Institute of Technology
Northwestern University
Princeton University
Rice University
Stanford University
University of California-Berkeley
University of Michigan-Ann Arbor

[Areas of Study](Academic Programs | Union College) Union-Schenectady, NY

2,133 students, 49% Female, 51% Male, has a trimester school calendar.

Cornell
Carnegie Mellon
Northwestern
Stanford
Princeton

Sorry GorillaGlue, did not see your 1,000-3,000 per class.
Guess I was concentrating on the Gender Percentages.
