To all those who have been involved in a Model UN club at school, what are some of the better conferences you have attended and why?

I'm starting the first Model UN club ever at my school in September and am hoping for some ideas.

if you’re in Va, all the good ones are at George Mason, UVA, John Hopkins, William & Mary, and then if you’re an IB school in the Mid-Atlantic there’s IBMARCMUN. There’s also TechMUN and many more.

Not in VA, try the conferences at the Ivy Leagues

ILMUNC.

End of discussion.

^ I really want to go to that this year. Like I need to work with my entire secretariat to earn money for the trip. They’re NAIMUN people. ILMUNC I know will be epic.

If ur an international… Here’s how it goes. Note: have obey been on one trip… But have had multiple, close friends tell me about their conferences for years now… So I think I’ve got it right

Istanbul/timun: good for beginners… A good place to get a chairing position. But all in all not that serious
Pamun (paris mun): heard it was very chill… I heard more about parties than the actual committees
Bermun (berlin mun): I attended this conference… Only did mun for one yr. It was fun… Our school did quite well… Everyone was main submitter except for two ppl in our school group. Most of the students there were actively involved… And it was really fun getting resolutions passed. At one point though my committee got super annoying bc after spending so much time working on a resource we"d fail it until there were only two reuses left. What a fail
China (Beijing I believe…?): supposedly super competitive as well

There u go… Good luck at w/e conference u go to. Just rmr that I’ll have fun anywhere as long as u don’t sit a corner and sleep. Be actively involved with the lobbying process-and bring a laptop. Somehow the ppl with laptops end up becoming main submitters even if they don’t contribute to the information in the resolution. Have fun :D

I thought model UN stuff were fake?

Umm sorry if it sounds incoherent. iPad autocorrections are so annoying!

^^ Fake, in what way?

Aren’t they some email/mail things that invite you to conferences? Or am I confusing something with something else entirely?

You are completely mistaken.

Does Model UN mean a lot in terms of resume? I was in one this previous year representing Vietnam.

Conferences who email you stuff is NYLC and whatnot… Model un is an extracurricular usually done after school… If I’m not mistaken.

Model UN is a typically team extracurricular, like debate or mock trial.

If you get awards at conferences(Gavels and Outstandings, it is useful) Also the position papers are good for college.

^^^Yeah, because the UN listens to a bunch of teens.

Yale is great

I’m in southern ontario so many of those ivy league conferences are good prospects. I have made up a list of potential conferences for our group to discuss, so thanks for the suggestions. I’m especially intrigued by the Ivy League MUN at UPenn! Looks very well established…then again, maybe something more intimate like Yale would be nice - their website says that everything takes place on Yale’s grounds and one can sit in on classes while they’re there! That sounds awesome too…

Btw, how hard is it to get recognized with awards and such at these things. Does it put one at a serious disadvantage to have never done it before?

bumppppppp
