Good Music Departments

I have a friend who goes to the Las Vegas Academy and she is a junior right now. She is tied for # 1 right now out of about 350 students. She has only taken Honors, AP, and her quoir classes and her GPA is 4.0 UW -4.65 W

So what are some schools with good music departments (especially quoir, chorus, or vocal) that match with her grades.....She wants to stay on the west coast.

USC, UCLA, U Washington, U Arizona, UC-Boulder, Chapman, and Azusa Pacific University look to have good programs, but do you guys know of any others????

Hmm...it's tough if she wants to stay on the west coast.

"match with her grades"...by this, i assume you mean very challenging academically. i'm sure this friend would have no trouble getting into a school like northwestern (which seems to have a strong music dept.), johns hopkins univ/peabody conservatory, oberlin/oberlin cons....these are midwest and east schools, but there are others like them. i think harvard has a connection to new england conservatory.

UCLA sounds like a great match...I've heard people mention Cal State Northridge, but I don't know if that would be so much of a match academically.

i think yale has good one but east coast...

Well she prefers to stay on the west coast, but any options would be fine

bump......

I don't know much about the left coast, I've never been over there - but Oberlin (specifically the Conservatory) in Ohio is absolutely amazing.

I would say Oberlin too. It's unbelievable.

CCM
Bowling Green
Eastmon

Azusa Pacific, definitely =)

It depends a lot on just what she wants - performance degree, BA in music, music ed degree, as well as whether she is specifically interested in choral music, or wants to work on becoming a vocal soloist.

If she is interested in choral music in particular, places like St. Olaf in Minnesota and Westminster Choir College in New Jersey come to mind but I do not know of any schools on the west coast that would be as good.

If she is interested primarily in vocal performance, her academic record will not be of nearly as much importance as her audition at most schools and she should be thinking in terms of picking a specific teacher rather than a specific school. I know the eastern schools much better than the western ones, so you would do better by asking your question in the Music Majors area of CC. I highly recommend you check out that section if she is interested in a music major of any sort - there is a lot of good information there and a bunch of people with more to tap into.

Many colleges have at least one or two very good vocal ensembles. If she is just looking for a top academic program on the west coast that would likely have some good choral singing options, she might check out Stanford, UCB, and UCSD in addition to the ones you listed.

Other schools combining excellent academics with a top-notch music program but not on the west coast include Carnegie Mellon University, Northwestern University, Oberlin, Rice University, Johns Hopkins/Peabody and U Michigan.

university of miami...outstanding music department.
