Hi all, this is a pretty general question, but I have little-to-none knowledge about this major and good degree programs so I just wanted to put this out here. We're talking undergrad, not graduate yet. I've looked at BU and Duquesne University so far and they seem pretty good. Can anyone verify this? What about other schools? I don't want a conservatory, I'd rather go to a liberal arts college with a music school where it would be possible to do a double major if I wanted.
Thanks so much!

Sophie, if you do separate title searches on “music ed” and “music education”, you find about two and a half pages on each. Maybe this will help http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/music-major/892168-search-tips-other-insights.html

Read through a number of them and you’ll see a few axioms that are oft repeated:

*Understand that a music ed degree is designed to provide the skills and prerequisites to qualify for initial or provisional state granted certification and license to teach in a k-12 public school.
*There are variations in each state’s requirements. It is often best to go to a school in the state you plan to teach.
*Based on the above, your state system could well be the most cost effective.
*Do not use teaching as a “fall back” or plan B. Have an honest intent to teach. If at all possible, get as much teaching and mentoring under your belt beforehand.
*The music ed curriculum is highly structured and sequenced, and is both time and credit intensive. It is extremely difficult to combine with any other major, other than another music discipline. And if you go that route, anticipate a five year time frame.

Just a sampling. A couple are more overview oriented than voice or the northeast.

thanks so much violadad!
That sounds like a great start!

Duquesne University is a great music school and has a good Music Education program with a 100% placemnet rate they say but if you are looking in PA I would also look at Penn State which has a very strong music education program as well. If you live in PA the base tuition rate will be lower but Duquesne University does give good music scholarships.

My daughter attends Mansfield University of Pennsylvania for Music Education and absolutely loves it there. I am not sure about other majors there as most of her friends are music majors, but one is a Chemistry major who is planning on going on to med school.
