Good music scene

What colleges have good music scenes preferrably rock and metal music? This is pretty important to me as I want to try and start a band in college. I'm looking to stay in the Northeast but wouldn't mind going down South or out to California. Thanks!

hah. have fun trying to with the terrible current trend of "screamo"

UT-Austin, College of Charleston, UMichigan, NYU

idk im kinda sad. my high school band is gonna be no more now :(

but kcirsch, i hope youre right :)
i hope there's a good amount of metalheads at NYU :)

Deep Purple-- this thread delves into good-music-scene colleges, although not the specific genre (such as metal):

suggest you try to find the latest Rolling Stone article mentioned near the end of the thread.

Thanks for the replies, lol this is an important factor to me. Oh and the screamo trend must die.

The colleges I've applied (ing) to so far are URI, UT, SUNY Stony Brook, and SUNY Albany. I'm looking for a fith and sixth slot. I may look into those schools kcrich, thanks.

Also, Wisconsin, Boston University, UGA and most schools in large cities.

Rochester, NY has a pretty good music scene (I think the artists Tweet and Teddy Geiger have gotten their starts here; there are plenty more though) so maybe University of Rochester?

You might want to get a hold of the book, Schools that Rock - The Rolling Stones Guide to College Music Scenes, which covers this exact topic. It's a great read as well. Here's the Amazon link, although any bookstore or library should be able to order you a copy:

Both Bard and Oberlin have conservatories. Oberlin's one is world class.
Many other small LACs like Kenyon and Vassar have good music scene too... but I wouldnt say that it's along the line of pop music and such...

i second UGA
so many bands come out of athens
