Hotel schools are in with inn crowd - USATODAY.com

I'm going to the Hotel school next year, and I was not so happy about the article. USAtoday unfortunately portrays the Hotel school as some sort of trade school program...

They don't waste any time proving that point in the opening:

"In a classroom on a hill next to New York's Cayuga Lake, more than 50 Cornell University hotel management students take notes as their instructor explains how to triple-sheet beds, provide turn-down service and schedule housekeepers."

seriously?? Out of the entire curriculum, which exemplfies the significance of the hospitality industry, they chose to highlight THAT -__-"

Read the entire article...it talks about growth in the industry, as well as how the industry is looking for well educated management prospects in several different segments of the industry. It also discusses the increasing popularity of Hospitality Management Programs. Very positive article regarding the industry as a whole.

I still enjoyed reading it, but I think they could've portrayed Cornell better and a little more accurately...hahha. Yeah, you're completely right that it shines positive light on the industry as a whole..sorry for being a bit negative hahha. Thanks for sharing the article with us!

No need for apologies, yousonofatree! My daughter will be a Hotel School student in the fall as well, and she has had to put up with jokes and people making fun of her because of her chosen career path. She's in a competitive program in her HS, and everyone there wants to be ibankers, doctors/scientists, lawyers, engineers, etc. They can't understand why she would want to study hospitality!

So my reasons for bringing up this article was to show that the field is growing and gaining in popularity. Honestly, I think that as more HS students start to understand how broad and exciting this field is, and how many different directions your career can take with a degree in this field, it will become even more popular! And believe it or not, they just added a hospitality business class in my daughter's HS for next year!

She gets frustrated with the comments on this site about hotelies, but just remember that most of the service oriented jobs in this industry can't be outsourced, and I'm confident that the future is bright for students studying in this major!
