Good or bad idea: Asking RISD precollege prof to write rec for non-RISD schools

D is applying to several schools that offer both strong visual arts (her first love) and strong liberal arts (a close second). She's getting recommendations from two of her academic teachers, but not from an art teacher because she's had her current one only for a month, and her former art teachers have left the school.

She attended the 6-week RISD pre-college program this past summer and one of her instructors told the class that he'd give a letter of rec to anyone who got an A. D will definitely ask him for a letter of rec to RISD, but what about some of the other schools she's interested in, primarily Wash U and possibly CMU? My daughter doesn't want to "impose", but my gut instinct says "yes, ask for all three schools". Can you foresee any problems with that?

Side note: The RISD pre-college instructor was not listed among the regular faculty members on the RISD website.

It's irrelevant (or should be) for the professor; go right ahead and ask. It's an equal imposition (and not much of one, at that - basically, part of the job), regardless of the school.

My son also attended a precollege program and two of his teachers offered to write him recommendations. They seemed more than willing to write them for all of his college applications. Teachers/professors expect the students to apply to a variety of schools. I would ask - - the recommendations my son received were wonderful and probably helped get him accepted into his top choices.

Thanks for the feedback - I appreciate it. I'll encourage D to ask the RISD prof for all 3.
