Good or Bad Parking

I am amazed as how horrible parking availability is through out nearly every campus I have visited. Can anyone name a college with good parking availability for students and visitors? If not, can you name some schools with parking that is worse that the average college?

I take classes at UGA, and it is a major pain in the arse to get parking. Only seniors can drive to class, meaning that you need to hitch a ride or get on an overcrowded campus bus.

GW, where I'm going next year, has parking in a parking garage, but it's too expensive. Very few students actually drive there, it's all metro. Plus, if you have ever been to DC, you would know how congested the roads are in the first place. The parking fee per semester is in the 1000s, I think.

Note that most colleges were built either before the invention of the car or during a time when only a small number of students had a car to bring. There was no thought given to saving land for parking lots. That is why many colleges ban cars for freshman -- they just do not have any extra places to park. I am not sure what you consider average but from what I have seen average is usually a college where at best a freshman with a car may be able to park it in some lot far from anything. Having visited over a 100 campuses for one reason or another, I have not found any that have a "good" parking situation. Some with more modern campuses and some of the older LACs with a small student population which had a lot of vacant land where they could put a couple of lots, are somewhat better than others. However, none I am aware of is in the top 50 of any USNews List.

At W&M, you don't get a car till Jr year, unless you work a certain amount or prove you need it for some other reason. But the campus is fairly small, only a 15 minute walk from one end to the farthest dorm at the other end, so it's only an issue for weekend trips and things.

New rule--the better the school the worse the parking.

As much as I complain, Rice has a pretty good system. All the parking, except for a small visitor lot or two near the admissions building, is out by the stadium. There are tons of spaces, and it is an easy walk to almost anywhere on campus. Plus, there are shuttle busses if you don't want to walk. It's really not a bad system, and you pay for the parking with a credit card. The kids have to park out there, too, but they have a parking pass.
