I got admitted to Cal and most likely will attend. I am thinking about doing the 5 year MS computer science program and also a Bachelors in economics. After i would like to work for Google for a couple a years. Is this a good path to an MBA? I want to attend Stanford or Harvard for the MBA.
Or is Haas undergrad program then MBA a better path?

anyone???

there are many “good” paths to an MBA and it’s hard to say one is “best.” while some people argue undergrad biz is kind or useless and lame if you want an mba while some note that they’re interested in one thing: business. why the F would you undergrad major in something OTHER than what you KNOW you want to do?

either way, mba programs take all sorts of majors, so there’s nothing wrong with choosing to get the CS+econ combo. there’s also nothing wrong with ditching that and going for haas undergrad. the question is what do you like better, and which one can you actually do exceptionally well in (read: poor gpa’s won’t look too hot if you want to go for harvard)

but gpa’s aside, i think a CS/econ major can land you some jobs haas can’t, and it would probably be nicer for you since you seem interested in IT. so just go for that, IMO. either path you take will have fair shots for an MBA given you have good experience by the time you apply + all the necessary stats, obviously. so good luck.

There are mainly two things important to MBA admissions: good undergrad gpa and prestigious work experience (whatever that means).

All other things are largely trivial. Whether you get a degree in nuclear engineering, computer science, women studies, or women engineering, it holds little weight compared to your GPA and work experience.

women engineering… that exists?

either way, the best advice i’ve heard is proving a passion and proving you’re an innovative, charismatic leader.

hell, i know a girl who spent a year in europe studying grass and cheese and starting a now self-sustained farmer’s market there (that she still gets checks for even though she’s back in the US)

she’s a 2nd year @ harvard B-school now, but yeah, you get how ridiculous these things can get. tons of creative things to do with your life if you want to follow through on your passions.
