Good places for a grad student to live?

Hey, I'm going to be a grad student at UT-Austin. I was hoping you guys could tell me about places to live in Austin. I think I have a rough idea of what the neighborhoods are like. I'm zeroing in on Hyde Park, but it doesn't seem to be as cheap as I thought it would be.

I want to share a 3BR (house or apartment, doesn't matter). I'm looking to get one for $1500-$1800 (500-600 a month). I want to live in a quieter neighborhood as I'll be a grad student and as close to campus as possible. Is my price range realistic? If I looked really hard, could I find a decent 3BR in the 1200-1500 range in Hyde Park? Also I won't have a car but I heard the shuttle goes to a lot of places anyway.

From what I have heard:

Hyde Park - quiet(er) area, close to campus, more grad students and professionals than undergrad crowd (no offense guys, but I really want to avoid the undergrad crowd). Seems to be a bit pricey. Close to campus, not quite walking distance I guess, but still really close.

Riverside - far from campus, more undergrads, but I heard crime rate is higher (not that it's insane, but just higher than other areas) and prices are cheaper.

North Campus - walking distance, but prices are a bit higher.

Far West - quiet, more grad students, but 20-30 minute shuttle ride away. I think it's cheaper than Hyde Park or North campus.

Is there any other neighborhood you guys can recommend? How is Central Austin?

Also how inflated are prices on craigslist? Am I being a rube looking solely on craigslist? Any advice in general? All of my roommates will be moving from another time zone (including me).

Thanks!

Try heylonghorn too.

From my knowledge, Hyde Park is more professionals and UT staff, while North Campus and Far West are more older students (though there are some undergrads), and West Campus and Riverside are largely undergrads.

North Campus is pretty affordable compared to West Campus. There are a bunch of houses over by the law school that are usually rented for pretty cheap.

How is Speedway in the 30-40 St area work out for grad students? Is it a decent area? It seems so close to campus (the RLM building for me).

Thanks guys!

This is a great location for those of us whose classes are on the North side of campus. The IF bus comes every 5 minutes or so throughout the semester and the stop on campus is not 200 feet from RLM.
