If you're just "checking out schools," you might want to look at a few of these schools, which also have terrific undergraduate sociology departments:

Amherst, Barnard (if female), Bryn Mawr (if female), Oberlin, Pitzer, Southwestern U (TX), Earlham, Denison

If you are thinking about a research or academic track in Sociology, the following list of the top 20 or so undergrad schools in production of Sociology PhDs per graduate might interest you. There's a fairly broad range of schools, both size and admissions selectivity. Might be a starting point:

Academic field: Sociology

PhDs and Doctoral Degrees: ten years (1994 to 2003) from NSF database
Number of Undergraduates: ten years (1989 to 1998) from IPEDS database
Formula: Total PhDs divided by Total Grads, multiplied by 1000

Note: Does not include colleges with less than 1000 graduates over the ten year period

NYU also has a good program & also a few famous faculty. The University of Chicago is probably the most famous for the field mainly due to their huge influence on the subject during the 20's to the 40's. I am not sure of how it is perceived nowdays but being the Uni of Chicago it's probably still a strong program.

In the UK I would say LSE is the strongest in the subject and has many famous faculty.
