Visiting UMD this weekend. Any suggestions of good places to eat close to campus?
thanks

I honestly can’t think of anyplace spectacular near UMD. I think they have a Looney’s Pub on Rt 1 very close to college, and there is a place called Bentley’s that’s not bad. They used to have a Mexican place very close by that I think they converted to somethng else just recently, but I don’t know what it is. Many people like Ledo’s pizza, but it’s kind of a local dive place.
I thought Maryversity might jump in with advice, or astrophysicsmom. You may want to PM them.

Hi, 1214mom! Of course I’m happy to add my two cents for what it’s worth, ha ha. Our favorite “quick” place to eat is Krazi Kabob which is at 4427 Lehigh Road - kinda like the Indian version of Chipotle…you pick what you want to put in a wrap with the kind of sauce you want. It’s good, fresh and you can get mild or spicy. Similar to that but Mediterranean is Garbanzo, which is in the CVS shopping center behind that. If you’re not sure about Indian or mediterranean food, I would second Looney’s Pub which is located on the ground floor of the Varsity apartments.

If you don’t mind a 5-10 minute drive from campus, it’s well worth it to go down route 1 (heading toward DC) to Hyattsville. There’s a fabulous place called Busboys and Poets (the address is 5331 Baltimore Ave (Baltimore Ave and Route 1 are the same thing). It’s on the left-hand side and it’s in a grouping of cute little shops and other restaurants. Great food, fun atmosphere.

Or, if the adults in the group want some brew, I think it’s a little further down, also on the left-hand side is a place called Franklin’s Brewery - the address is 5121 Baltimore Ave (so that would make me think it’s before Busboys, but for some reason I think it’s after…?) It is a microbrewery that crafts some nice varieties and they have a variety of american fare - you can make a meal of just appetizers which I think are a little more consistent than the entrees. What makes Franklin’s worth the ride is not only is the beer good, but there is an adorable, old-fashioned general store attached to it with some adorable old-fashioned items and some well, eye-brow raisers that will inspire a giggle or two.

Whatever you decide, don’t miss a visit to The Dairy at the Visitor’s Center…best homemade ice cream ever!

Hope you have a wonderful visit!

I completely agree with maryversity’s suggestions having eaten at both Busboys and Poets and Franklin’s a few times. Another suggestion is Mamma Lucia’s, a little Italian restaurant, at 4734 Cherry Hill Road in College Park that is in the opposite direction of the above mentioned restaurants but still very close to campus. We ate there over Family Weekend and were happily surprised with the food!

I second Mama Lucias! Have eaten there twice now. Was very good.

Stop by Lot 1 before the Syracuse game and join us. Limited menu - Popeye’s chicken and Bass Ale. :-)

Bobby(Flay) Burger Palace under the Varsity Apartments. Get a Bleu Burger, Onion Rings and a loaded Vanilla Shake then prepare for a nap.

Thanks for all the input, it is really appreciated. Just hoping for nice weather…spoiled living in San Diego today it was in the 80’s

Sardi’s is a great (and very reasonably priced) Peruvian chicken place on Baltimore Ave / Rt 1, going away from DC. It’s on the opposite side of Baltimore Ave as the main UMCP campus.
