Preferably a place popular with students? So that i can see them in their "natural habitat"

The Medici is a great place to eat. A current student can fill you in on the exact location. All I remember is it was with in walking distance of the campus.

Also, it has the most amazing milkshakes ever made. DO NOT balk at the $4 price... if you are not satisfied with their strawberry banana milkshake mail me the unfinished portion and I personally will reimburse you.

lol thanks

it's on 57th street, east of campus. If you ask any student, they will be more than happy to point you in the right direction.

There are some other cool places on 57th-- Istria Cafe, by the tracks, and Salonica, and Caffe Florian. There's also some trendy stuff on 53rd (One World Cafe, on 53rd and Kimbark, for example).

The Med is definitely the way to go, though.

The best restau in hyde park is La Petite Folie, but you won't find many students there because it has "downtown pricing" (for "downtown quality)

57th street-
medici's

students in natural habitat?

Div school

Max P's cafeteria. The public can eat there, too.

FWIW, no one travels to Hyde Park for the food, with ONE exception: Harold's Chicken Shack on 53rd.

L'Chateau B

Orly's cafe(I think that's the name) on 55th street has good food for pretty cheap prices. About 8 or so of us went there a few Saturdays ago and were bombarded with lots of free food( pita bread, bagels and other assorted breads, some kind of pasta thing, and then pastries) and that was all on top of the large amounts of food that we ordered.

jack,

hilarious.

newmassdad,

Why would anyone willingly eat at Bartlett? Try the GSB cafe if you really want to eat on campus.

d_leet,

what are you talking about? Orly's is one of the worst places to eat in hyde park.

It makes sense for prospies to eat a meal at one of the dining halls. Doesn't it make sense to evaluate the food you may be eating for the next couple of years? See if the dining hall is clean? Make sure there are options with your allergies or veganism? Further, the OP mentioned that he wanted to eat in a place with lots of students. The best bet outside the weekend for eating with/around students is a dining hall, and students tend to be pretty friendly and honest with prospies who sit at a house table and ask questions. Sometimes there's more to a meal than just the food.

My D loved the Thai place on 57th this summer...didn't love the cafeteria food (but you should visit Bartlett just to get the feel of it). There's also a really interesting bookstore to stop in on the way to the Thai place and Medici.

CB,

Why Bartlett? The OP said "Preferably a place popular with students? So that i can see them in their "natural habitat"". I don't think the OP was talking about GSB students...

Besides, Bartlett food gets on you only if you eat it day in and day out. Visitors should not be in that category. Finally, you can't beat the convenience.

It is downright blasphemous to criticize Bartlett food. Do you understand the dining hall alternatives? BJ "food" is not real. It's Satan's curse on UChicago. If you truly enjoy BJ (or Pierce) "food", you are a disturbed individual.

I heart the beej.
