Good private college fits for my DD22: Insights much appreciated!

There are some good schools listed by the posters here.

Once you have identified some potential schools, you might look at the Common Data Set for each one: Sections C9-C11 will have statistical information about the most recent entering freshman class; Section C7 will tell you what academic and non-academic factors, along with respective weighting, are used by the school in making admissions decisions. This might help you focus your list of potential schools for application.

Thanks everyone. So grateful for all your thoughtful and expert insights, and guidance on colleges to consider. I started with no idea and now have a long list that she can apply to! So thankful to your selfless advice and thoughts! We have quite some thinking and prioritizing to do

If you are interested in the East coast, three LACs to investigate are Skidmore (for the artsy/fiction side), Bard (especially if a deep thinker), and Conn College (all around nice school with a nice vibe/setting).

Kenyon? The writiing is amazing and she would crush the sciences there.

One additional thing. You state, “I think she’ll do well in a college that is smaller.” What does your daughter think? I ask this because when I was doing college visits with my daughter several years ago, we visited several LACs that I thought would be perfect for her; ultimately, however, she ended up at a large, public university because not only was it highly rated in the subjects that she likely would be studying, but also in significant part because she attended a good but smallish high school where her graduating class had less than 100 students, and she wanted a different experience for college.

If your daughter can visit some schools, I would include public universities with strong English or writing programs (e.g., University of Iowa) in the list. Most of these schools will have honors colleges/programs that can put her into a smaller “tribe” and reduce any problem with the school seeming too big. She might like the feel of a larger university.

(Regarding all the LACs that my daughter rejected, there were several that I happily would have attended! As my wife likes to say, “College is wasted on the young.”)

since she loves to ski, check out Ft Lewis College in Durango. As part of the CO State system, they are a public LAC and seem to check most of the boxes. Durango is really cool town to visit.

I encourage you to check it out.
