Good Reads for Pleasure

I need to read more for pleasure. All the reading I've done has been either for school or books I felt like I should read because they're on some list. I've read the Bronte sisters, The Divine Comedy, the works of Shakespeare, Dodsworth, and The Stranger. Now I want to read some fun things that will lengthen my RAS (reading attention span).

Just list anything you've read and really enjoyed, or anything you've heard others praise. Nothing is off limits.

Ready?
Go.

While it’s not really “pleasurable” it’s a very good book- Beloved.

What kind of books do you like?

War and Peace~ Very Good
The Discworld Novels

I second Beloved (by Toni Morrison, right?)

And the Discworld novels by Terry Pratchett (sp). Very funny, lots of satire. My favorite is Small Gods.

I posted that too…

I’ve had to request most of them on interlibrary loan so I’m only on Wyrd Sisters

Yes on Beloved- Toni Morrison (amazing author) :].

What books do I like? I like books.

Hmm, straight off my Facebook books app favorites section:

Someday this pain will be useful to you-peter cameron (LOVE this book…very funny in a sarcastic, snarky way)
Little Earthquakes-Jennifer Weiner (girly book, very chick lit but nicely written)
I Am the Messenger-marcus zuzak (good, also book thief by him)
In Cold Blood-Capote (disturbing, but addictive)
Poisonwood Bible-Kingsolver (nice, long book about female relationships)
Fight Club-Palahniuk (great as movie, very quotable)
Overachievers-Robbins (appropriate!)
The Other Boleyn Girl (& rest of Tudor series)-Philippa Gregory

anything by Kurt Vonnegut

It’s a younger read, but it was a good book- PANDEMIA

Atonement by Ian McEwan is absolutely phenomenal and vivid…

You’re funny :D

Harry Potter books
Ayn Rand- Fountainhead, Anthem
Nietzsche- he invokes thinking
The Great Gatsby

^ oooh, we read The Great Gatsby for school, but i liked it :)

Lighter, funnier reads: anything by David Sedaris.

Also, because I adore him, I’m going to suggest David Levithan. His books are written mostly for teenagers/young adults, and a lot of them deal with homosexuality (I’m just saying that now so that people don’t PM me later with “Argh you’re trying to convert me!”).

I second David Sedaris.

Also, the Bourne trilogy by Robert Ludlum-very different from the movies.

Dostoevsky short stories (esp. White Nights)

We The Living by Ayn Rand (this rarely appears on anyones list of literature dealing with the struggle of a young woman). The English translation is a bit different than the original, but IMO, worth reading.

I’ve fallen in love with Johnathan Safran Foer. Read both “Everything is Illuminated” and “Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close”. They are very character driven, and Foer creates some great characters. I fell in love with Oscar from ELaIC, he’s the kid I always wished I was.

Definitely check out anything by Chuck Palahniuk, as well. I finished “Choke” last week, and started “Haunted” today. “Choke” was dark, it takes a look into the mind of a sex addict. It becomes a kind of absurd social commentary. I enjoyed his writing style.

Some older, random suggestions…
“America, The Book”. - John Stewart
“I Am America, and So Can You!” - Stephen Colbert
“Dune”- Frank Herbert
“The Gunslinger” (series)- Stephen King
“The Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy” (series)- Douglas Adams
“The Sirens of Titan”- Kurt Vonnegut

I gave my D “Lovely Bones” for Christmas and she really enjoyed it.

I second Vonnegut, and would like to note the absence of plays here. I like Shakespeare, Wilde, Aristophanes, Beckett, Eliot, and others, and now I’m reading Bodas de Sangre by Lorca.
