What schools have a good department in Russian Studies/Language? Do Illinois schools like UIC, NIU and UIUC have a good program in this? Any top russian program put alot of grads with jobs in Moscow (in the business world)?

you mean the corrupt/evolving business world in moscow? ;)
although...an american in russia = $$$

Haha, are you implying American = being kidnapped? Or just they can make alot of money?

Neither.

Americans are usually duped for their $$$'s. Doesn't go as far as kidnapping though.

right but if you are an american businessman working in russia, the money you make and quality of life in russia for you will be high.

Well yeah, some goes for any country (like China) if you're a tourist who doesn't know the language/culture well.

Reed College in Portland, Oregan has a good language department with language housing devoted to Russian.

Agreed. I'm Russian and applying to Reed EDII myself (although not to study Russian, obviously).

Pomona has some all Russian section of their language house. Stanford has a Slavic dorm. I know a friend here who is very happy with his Russian classes. Call up Russian professors, see where they got their PhDs, BAs and see where the Russian is being learned in America.

I know this is kind of an old thread, so I don't know if some previous posters are still around. I was wondering about the list of schools that collegehelp posted. Are they supposed to have especially strong programs? If so, what is the source of that information? Plenty of schools offer some form of Russian language or studies programs, so we're interested in which ones offer the stronger ones. Thanks so much.

This is helpful, but I'm still interested in information that we can use to assess the strength of the different programs and in knowing how the list collegehelp provided was compiled.

Call professor and ask about strong programs, look into class sizes, study abroad options, keep in mind what options you want available and where many graduates go from each program (grad school, law, med school, ect) for both the entire school and the program in particular, and also take into account overall education.

I think I compiled the earlier list by selecting schools (from the College Board Index of Majors) that had Russian Language/Studies and which I thought were good schools overall.

Here are a couple of lists from the Gourman Report which has a set of criteria for evaluating specific programs. The Gourman Report criteria favor larger universities so you won't find any LACs on this list.
