Good safety colleges for a student with sub par gpa ?

I have around a 3.0 gpa and a super score of 1870 on the SAT. Cr+M= 1260.
I have really good ECs such as volunteering in another country, Founder of a club etc.
I want to pursue Computer Science in college.

Currently living in NYC but have no problem attending colleges out of state. What are my chances of getting into a school like: Stonybrook, Ohio State, Boston University, Boston College ?

Any suggestions on colleges I should apply to as safety for computer science undergraduate would be appreciated. I hope to become a first generation college student .

Thanks in advance.

Are you a junior?

Stony brook- Right Sat Score
Very far off from the right GPA
According to prep scholar you have about a 7% chance
Ohio State- Right SAT Score
Bad GPA
15% chance
Boston Uni.- Right sat Score
Bad GPA
8% chance
Boston college- Bad SAT
Bad GPA
Peep Scholar gave you a 1.5% chance
Sorry to tell you but your going to need to get your GPA up if you can, with that low of a GPA you aren’t gonna be able to go to many top schools sorry to tell you.

A senior applied to Cuny as safety any others would be appreciated.

None of those schools will accept you. BC is a top school, BU will expect higher stats, and the other will expect a higher GPA.

Much is REALLY going to depend on how much your family will pay each year. You’re not likely going to get into schools that give great aid. The schools that will likely accept you will expect your family to pay most/all costs.

What are your parents saying? how much will they pay each year?

The schools you posted are beyond remote.

Manhattan College and University of Scranton both have ABET accredited computer science programs. Your GPA is still below these but you have a fighting chance. The others, no.

Manhattan College should be a snap for you to visit and Scranton isn’t that far. I would visit Scranton you will love it. You may try SUNY Buffalo as well.

Turner I have applied to University at Buffalo as well as New Paltz. Manhattan college tuition is about 40k. I think I would rather go into a CUNY school or a SUNY are my chances really that low ? Thanks for taking the time to respond.

Since I will be the first in my family to attend college I do not get much help from my parents. Also our income is low which means I qualify for Educational Opportunity programs. I will get money from FAFSA I believe and if I have to take loans I am willing to do so.

Most of the schools you have applied to are well out of reach. And we don’t know if you have any financial constraints.

Agree @TurnerT suggestions above as reasonable reaches. Marist might be another school where you might have a chance as your SAT is good but your GPA is low. Perhaps some less competitive SUNY schools such as SUNY Brockport, SUNY Platsburgh, SUNY IT, if you want NYC look at Pace or Wagner, and maybe Sacred Heart in CT.

Try using the SuperMatch function on CC under Find a College

@UniversityDreams I think you should do the tuition calculators for Scranton, Manhattan, Buffalo and Marist. You may need to get some financial information from your parents but do them because that is the only way to know for sure. Let’s hope SUNY Buffalo comes through.

@TurnerT I am unable to get my financial information atm. However, I would also like to add that my gpa didn’t suffer because I was lazy it was various reasons such as illness and financial troubles. I don’t like to talk about it much so I didn’t write about it in my college essay, but I did write about it in my additional information section of the common app. I was wondering if that would make any difference.

I think you will get in Buffalo and its a great school. You will finally get real wings.

You will not be allowed to borrow much…only $5,500 for freshman year. By submitting FAFSA, you’ll get a $5700 grant if your EFC is 0. If you’re a NY resident, you may get TAP grant, but that’s not much.

I don’t think you understand how limited aid is for students with modest stats.

Since you don’t know your parents income, run the NPCs and just put $20 for income and 0 assets. That will show you the MAX aid you’ll get. If you later find out that your parents circumstances are better, then put in the correct numbers THEN…for now, just use 20k and 0 assets.

Most of the schools you’ve listed are either too high of reaches and/or will NOT be affordable…you won’t get enough aid. Most schools GAP…most don’t have a lot to give.

Apply to as many SUNYs and CUNYs you can.

@mom2collegekids Thank you very much for this. I did apply to the maximum number of CUNY’s as well as decent number of SUNY’s. Sorry if I sounded ignorant, but I had no idea that aid was that limited. I also don’t mind going to a decent 4 yr college and then transferring after I get my grades up.

SUNY Buffalo will cost just below $9,000 a year before loans. You can borrow about $5,000 a year, so out of pocket will be about $3,800. I assumed your Fafsa EFC was $0.

Summer income will help.

@TurnerT Thank you, I hope I do get in. I also forgot to mention I held an paid internship this past summer, where I interned with the I.T director. Is that common ? At my internship I was the only high school student the rest were college students, so I was wondering if that would be a decent advantage.

Also, I was wondering what happens if I get rejected by all the colleges I apply to. I want to attend college for sure, so do I get to apply again after ?

Edit: Thank you for calculating the cost for me, I do not mind working while going to college at all. I think that is something I can totally handle.

You really need to speak to your folks about money. See what they can do. Are you a minority? Did you apply as a Computer Science major?

@TurnerT Yes, and Yes.

Minority status should help you admissions-wise especially if you are a male.

Keep the faith on U B. You are spot on average if a bit above on test scores.

I don’t know if minority status is considered by the publics. that said, likely a CUNY or SUNY will accept you.

Work as much as you can this summer to put towards books and other expenses. If you can start working before that, then great.

If you were to get shut out, then you’d start at a CC.
