Hi everyone! I am a current junior trying to build my college list. I was wondering if anyone had any good recommendations for safety/match schools for me! I am planning on majoring in political science and sociology. I am also interested in potentially attending law school or grad school for public policy. Any private safeties/matches with awesome merit scholarships would be great! I prefer schools in/very near a large city. Any suggestions?
Here are my stats:
-GPA: 4.3 weighted as of now, 3.85 uw
-I have not taken the SAT yet but I will in April
-All the APs taken (including senior year): AP European History, APUSH, AP English Language, AP Spanish Language, AP Gov, AP Microeconomics, AP English Lit, & other honors classes
ECS:
-Founder of a student organization focused on empowering and educating young women interested in politics
-National Honors Society
-National Project Director for a National Activist Society
-My school’s Model UN logistics officer
-Head of Activism for a student magazine
-Board member for my town’s philanthropy program where I created my own service project
-Tutor for middle schoolers
-internship with my local congressman
-political researcher for my county’s democratic party
What is your home State? For some students they can use their State Flagship as a safety. How do you normally do on standardized tests? Top 1%, 5%, 10%, etc? If you are looking for merit, what price point are you trying to get to? It doesn’t help to get $20k at a $80k school if you can only afford $30k.
California! I have my in-state safety/match schools to be SFSU, UCSC, UCSB, & San Diego State. I usually do top 10% for standardized & I am trying to get a price of around $40k for out of state schools.
My D20 had very slightly higher grades, 11 APs and a 34 ACT. She applied poli sci or politics to all schools, we are from CA and she also plans to go to grad school for her MPP (I can’t talk her into law school). Her “safety/match” schools were: Utah, Temple, Simmons (women’s college), Arizona, LMU, SDSU. You can scroll through my history to see merit/acceptances and reach/wildcard schools. Note her 4 safeties all had accelerated 4+1 MPP programs; something to keep in mind to keep costs down. She ended up at Cal and is very happy there.
Willamette, UPugetSound, Lewis&Clark, UUtah, Asu Barrett would all work if you want likelies/matches on the West Coast. Occidental for a reach?
OOS, Macalester, Dickinson, American U, Denison Lugar Scholars, Kalamazoo.
Run the npc on all of those.
Have you tried running a Net Price Calculator at somewhere like American University? Getting many private schools to $40k is doable on merit only but makes them more of a reach do to the unpredictability of merit.
