Good SAT Needed for Art School?

this is not for me, by the way. it's a close friend of mine, and she's an art freak (has a very impressive portfolio, worked at art studios, etc.), but she's got only 1890 on her SAT. Her grades are not too bad, but she may have some Bs here and there. Her GPA's around 3.4~3.6.

She's into mainly oil painting but can do others, too.
What's the minimum score required for her to get into a good art school? she's still looking through colleges but of course i believe she wants to go to a good one if possible.

thanks!

i really don't think that that is a bad SAT score and a 3.4/3.6?? you are crazy if you consider that bad. your friend is fine.

Yeah, what they said.

These are excellent grades/SATs for an art school, so tell your friend not to worry at all.

Art schools do not look at grades for acceptance. My daughter had horrible academics, her GPA was 2.4, her ACT 16 (!), but with an outstanding portfolio she got into every school she applied to - Pratt, SVA, SAIC, CCA, SMFA, KCAI.

Grades do matter for financial aid though, she could have gotten much more money in scholarships from these schools.

Most art schools place far more emphasis on the student's portfolio than on academic performance (assuming the HS grades and/or SAT scores are at least above average), and your friend's GPA and SAT scores are certainly more than adequate. Tell her not to worry about the academic side now, but to really start working on that portfolio. It's the portfolio that will get her into (or keep her out of) the top art schools.

costelle notes,"Art schools do not look at grades for acceptance. "

Response: This isn't true for all art programs. RISD admission officers noted that most rejections are due to academics. They want a minimum of 3.3 unweighted GPA, not counting art, music, drama, gym etc.

CMU bases half their admission decision on GPA and SATs

University of Cincinnati School of Design admission is solely GPA and SAT based. Thus, it depends on the school.

Moreover, decent GPA and SATs do affect scholarship offers

syracuse also looks at grades.

while calarts, i didn't even submit an sat score and i was accepted. i had a pretty strong portfolio though.

Yes its true that more selective art schools will look at academics in considering applicants. For schools like Pratt and SVA there are a lot of available spaces, so they tend to be more relaxed with the academics I suppose. Thats a really good GPA/test score though.

oh thanks everyone. she's looking mainly at Syracuse and Pratt. Thanks!

My D was accepted Early Decision at MICA and RISD. She had a strong portfolio, 2.96 GPA, and 1940 SAT. We got the impression that a B average was okay as long as the portfolio showed potential.

Maryj, yes, if the portfolio is outstanding, they will take a lower GPA,but they still won't ignore the GPA. However, for both MICA and RISD to take less than a 3.3, you really have to have a terrific portfolio!

Also, as you noted, a better than average SAT for RISD, will also lower the GPA requirements.

I think it's about the balance. Higher grades and SAT's will cushion an okay portfolio; a strong portfolio will cushion lower grades or SAT's. But a weak portfolio...back to the drawing board.
