Good SATs, bad GPA but improving, what are my odds of getting into UNC Chapel Hill?

I am a high school junior and I don't know my odds of getting into UNC-Chapel Hill or any other such school. More than anything else, I want to go to a good southern school.

My SAT score is a 2140 with an 800 in math, 690 in critical reading, and 650 in writing. I got this on my first try (I don't know if that matters, but I heard that colleges look at how many times someone takes the SATs).

My freshman and sophomore year GPA is a 2.91. But this year, I an getting around a 4.1 GPA. Also, I am in a prestigious magnet program (48 people from my county get accepted and it's a fairly large county).

I also heard that ethnicity and location plays a role in college admissions. I am of Indian heritage and I live in New Jersey.

For extracurricular activities, I have been wrestling since freshmen year and I have been varsity since sophomore year. I also play guitar.

I am not sure of what colleges are looking for, other than GPA, SAT, and evidence of doing something outside of school. Based on what I posted, what are my odds of getting into UNC at Chapel Hill, or any other such college.

Are you a NC resident?

^ He's from New Jersey.
UNC is a reach for anyone OOS, but your SAT looks good. The GPA, on the other hand, doesn't - what's your rank?

Look for another school. I know many with much better stats who got flat-out rejected by UNC.

My class rank with my freshman and sophomore year GPA is 66%. I'm sure it'll be higher after junior year. If you think UNC is out of my reach, then please suggest a decent southern college that is within my reach.

I don't think your chances for UNC are good.
Hmm, maybe Georgia Tech? Your GPA still isn't high enough, but your extreme increase in GPA and your good SAT score could be a hook.

Have you considered:
Clemson
College of Charleston
Elon
Furman
Georgia Tech
JMU
U Florida
U Georgia
U Miami
UNC Asheville
UNCW
U Richmond
USC-Columbia

^^^I've never heard of most of those colleges before, but I'll definitely look into them. Would it be wise for me to take the ACT to try to offset my GPA?

Not particularly, unless you think your ACT would be much better than your SAT. I would concentrate on improving the other parts of the application- grades, extracurriculars, recommendations, and especially essays.

If i take the ACT and do not like the results, then do I have to show anyone? Because I heard that if I was to take an SAT subject test, then that subject test would be sent even if I didn't want it to be.Would I be able to pretend as though I never took the ACT if it wasn't too good?

UNC takes 82% of it's admissions from NC, therefore the 18% out of state is highly competative. The schools only get your ACT score if you have it sent there. If you take it, just don't put down any school codes, and send it later if your scores are ok, or take until you get good scores and have only that one sent.

UNC is extremely competitive out of state and still relatively competitive in stae so it's pretty tough. I've heard through some peopl I know ghat this year UNC has had more applicants than ever and I know they had to push back their application deadlines. You have a good SAT score ut your GPA is low, and your extra curriculars are also weak. Apply anyways but consider other schools like those warblersrule86 mentioned and add NCSU, Wake Forest, Virginia Tech, and Davidson to your list to check out... Good luck!
