Good school for Biochem

I'm looking for schools with good Biochem programs. Not the Ivies though I'm pretty sure I don't want to go to a big Ivy, open to suggestions.

Consider Haverford which has outstanding sciences in an intimate LAC setting. Both its biology and its chemistry programs are very strong, and the chemistry major allows you the option of concentrating in biochemistry. Strong emphasis on undergraduates engaging in research: every chem major must do a senior research thesis, and most majors get paid jobs in faculty labs either term-time or in the summers. About a third of Haverford’s chem majors go on to top Ph.D. programs and another third to medical school; the rest usually find jobs as teachers, lab researchers, or in other fields.

Also, Grinnell (IA), Bowdoin (ME), Wesleyan (CT), Ct. College, Carleton (MA), Franklin & Marshall ¶, Colgate (NY) and Reed (OR). Some larger schools are Wisconsin, Washington, UCSD, Suny Stony Brook and Michigan. Best of luck!

St. Lawrence University (NY) has biochemistry and women’s crew.

If your looking for both women’s crew and strong sciences, Williams should be on the list.

On what basis are Connecticut College and St Lawrence considered especially good schools for biochem?

I’m not criticizing, but I’ve been trying to identify schools good in life sciences myself, and these two don’t make any list that I’ve seen, though I wish they would.

55 LAC’s in USNWR’s rankings, if you are interested in rankings.

Fiske Guide 2011, Princeton Review’s Best 373

High freshmen retention rate, merit aid, need-based aid, housing all 4 years.
New Science Building, small classes, great relationships with professors. Great quality of life, beautiful location in Northern New York.

(Indeed, I was almost in tears at the graduation ceremony when I was standing near a lot of the professors who parted from their recession & stood in two rows applauding for the graduates as they recessed. These professors cared about their students, wanted them to keep in touch with them etc. Very emotional, I was very touched by this)

One of my children was able to get funded for research project (in life sciences) for a summer & then presented at a consortium event in a major New England city at hotel. So doing this type of research is not limited to large public universities.

Why must SLU show up on a list somewhere for biochemistry? Does it have to?
I suggested it to the OP because of SLU’s commitment to life sciences, the quality of life there & her interest in women’s crew. Plus, she could probably get a high percentage of her need met there. SLU students & SLU community typically use Ottawa airport, so a passport is necessary to fly in and out of Canada.

ClassicRockerDad, many of our hidden gems do not show up on lists for undergrad majors!
That does not mean that particular school is mediocre in that particular major.

Hi SLUMOM,

Relax, I meant no offense. I wasn’t referring to USNews rankings.

I’ve seen lists of baccalaureate origins of Math and Science PhDs. Going to a school that sends a high fraction of it’s graduates on to PhDs in sciences seems to be a good indication that graduate schools feel that the college’s students are adequately prepared. I feel that being on such a list for a LAC says a lot, because most LACs don’t have preprofessional programs, and that a science student will find a critical mass of like-minded peers. However, for a large school, where so many people study preprofessional, the number of graduates who go on to get PhDs in sciences seems more telling.

It’s possible that some schools that would be on that list if it were restricted to just life sciences, wouldn’t be on the list for science overall. I don’t know where to get such a list, but I think it would be useful.

I was simply asking the basis for your recommendation. You’ve answered that it is based on your personal experience from your daughter. That’s great input. Thanks. No accusation of mediocrity from me.

Oh, I wasn’t offended at all & I had a chance to share my child’s experience.
Maybe someone else will read it and check out SLU, besides the OP.
One of the good things about CC is that it could result in someone checking out a school that they never heard of!

Although the OP didn’t mention crew… I am also interested in this topic, but prefer some clear evidence (eg, number of PhDs). There are dozens of LACs that match up with the SLU description, but it can be very hard to determine which ones have truly strong programs.

University of Rochester is an excellent school for biochemistry. It’s known as a “New Ivy” and is a pretty small school. It has a great academic reputation.

I know this is kinda old but I kinda forgot about the thread but I would like a school with a crew team possibly I haven’t decided if I want to pursue it in college it is a little weird because I didn’t bring it up in this post. I do want a smaller school because I come from a small high school ~400 in the whole school.
