Linguistics is different from foreign language study. For example, MIT has one of the most famous linguistic departments in the country, but it's not the best place for a French major.

Middlebury and Dartmouth have perhaps the best reputation for foreign language instruction in New England. UChicago has, I believe, an excellent linguistics program.

I don't want to ask anybody to do more work, but it would be interesting to see the original post in terms of percent of linguistics majors. For example I saw the following:

University of Iowa 15
University of Chicago 14
Harvard University 14
University of Maryland-College Park 14
Cornell University 14

Chicago has a considerably smaller undergraduate population than both Harvard and Cornell (Arts and Sciences), and Chicago, Harvard, and Cornell have a smaller undergraduate body than UMD and Iowa.

and again:

University of Chicago 73
Smith College 72

Considering how small Smith is, that's an incredible number.

Percentages may give the OP an idea of how popular the major is at given school and his/her likeliness of bumping into somebody else who is a lingustics/language major.

school, total bachelors, number bachelors in languages/linguistics, percent languages/linguistics

This post is the most helpful, methinks. Columbia has great offerings in foreign languages, but its linguistics program is practically nonexistent. Many of the LACs listed don't have linguistics programs at all or have very few language offerings. A LAC that offers French, German, and Spanish can't compete with a university that offers Hittite, Sanskrit, and Old Irish.

KaznackFCRC, your post is like asking which colleges have great history or political science programs; they're rather different. Linguistics is the study of languages, but rarely do you learn more than one or two at the undergraduate level.

I find that linguistics is highly misunderstood by nearly everyone, including very educated people and people who think they may want to major in it. I remember one student at my college (I have a BA in linguistics) trying to get out of taking the intro class because she had "taken EIGHT years of LATIN!" Knowing Latin has nothing to do with linguistics. I am not a polyglot myself, though I've studied other languages, and do pretty well in a couple of them.

My advice for prospective majors is to find an intro linguistics book and look through it. Then you'll have a much better idea of what the field is actually about, and whether it actually interests you or not.

There are fewer than 150 universities/colleges (of the ~4,000) that even offer linguistics as a major. Many have it as a minor, but still very few. Unlike majors such as psychology, linguistics varies widely in quality at universities; it can be difficult to get a really strong program, even out of all those that have it.

The best privates: Stanford, MIT, Cornell, UChicago, UPenn.
The best publics: Berkeley, UCSC, UCLA, UCSD, Ohio State, UMass, UIUC, UMich.
