Hey. I’m trying to help a friend find schools that are good matches and safeties for him. He’s looking for a school with a good, well funded policy debate team as well as strong education departments, especially in government and economics. He would prefer a larger school. He gets mostly As with a few Bs, probably around a 3.75. He would probably have around a 1300-1400 with the old SAT. Any recommendations would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Emory is very strong in debate-- I think the program is called the Barley Forum.

Umm. . .I think Emory has Parley Forum. . .

Anyways, I think Gonzaga and Whittman are good colleges to look at. . .these are the teams that final frequently at NDT and CEDA
I thinkthe US Air Force Academy has a policy-only debate program.

I would check with people at national college tournaments like Berkeley and Stanford. . .there is bound to be a number of people who know. . .

Definitely look at Whitman. The policy debate coach at my school went there and did debate, and my school has arguably the best debate team in the state. (It's Nevada, but still...) As I recall, she went to nationals in high school a few times.

Bates College in maine
and macalester college in st. paul, MN

I'm assuming we're talking NDT/CEDA...

Whitman, Harvard, UCB, KU (has qualified for the NDT something like 40 years in a row), UT Austin, NYU, Northwestern

hey, lanie22. . .
it sounds like you're in college and doing policy.
Do you know how intense / time consuming college policy debate is?
If I want to study science at a college like Stanford, and still committ myself to policy will i have time?

thanks for all the help guys!

I don't know much about college policy but I am starting in college parli. I know the coach at my school (Claremont) places a large emphasis on people doing whatever amount works for them. For the best information about a specific school's debate program, talk the coach. They might even be able to help you get into the school, or at least put in a good word.

sorry for the typo--it's the Barkley Forum

don't forget MSU

I'm unfortunately not in college, but I'm a 4th year policy debater and thus know a bunch of kids who are in college and have made that commitment. From what I hear, what you put into debate is what you get out of it - I have friends at KU who are happy going to a few regional tournaments a year and they do minimal work for the squad, whereas debaters who are trying to, for example, get bids to the NDT or actually clear at competitive tournaments work 5-6 hours each night...
Can you be successful in school AND debate? Absolutely. Would that be ridiculously stressful at Stanford? Absolutely. But if you love debate, you should do it. Plus, there's no harm in trying it out freshman year and then dropping if it begins consuming too much time - that's what I plan to do.

Wake Forest, it's "Team", but, yeah, one of the best programs in the nation.

Dartmouth, Whitman, Boston U, the Claremont Colleges

The Claremont colleges focus much more on parli than policy, but parli is awesome!

northwestern, and some christian/catholic ones--catholic u and liberty u.
