good schools for anthro/archy?

Hi guys! Know of any good schools for archaeology or anthropology? Specifically, I'm looking for a school without a greek life, preferably in or near a city. I'm in college now at a small rural LAC..so this would be for transfer. Thanks!

Do you know exactly what kind(s) of anthro you want?
I'd recommend my school (Penn) for anthro but it doesn't really fit your criteria. Maybe UChicago has a suitably un-Greek persona?

Princeton? BU?

Penn is very well known in anthropology.....has a Greek life though, but has a great city campus.

Can you give us an idea of what your GPA and other stats might be? It's hard to make recommendations if we are only guessing where you might have a shot at, especially as a transfer. So far all of the schools mentioned take very, very few transfers.

The University of Michigan. It does not meet any of your criteria save one...it is ranked #1 in Anthropology.

Ok, well I had like a 3.7 in high school and a 28 ACT. My college gpa is probably...3.5? around there. I also have excellent essays/recs and ...I'm native american, if that helps.

You have strong credentials and your Native American background will indeed help. Certainly apply to schools like Harvard, Stanford, Chicago, Penn and Yale, but like Carolyn pointed out, those schools take anywhere from 30-60 transfer students annually. Forget Princeton, I do not think they accept transfers this year.

Make sure you apply to more reasonably selective schools. Given your background and solid grades, I think you have a great chance at Michigan and UC-Berkeley.

Hi thanks! Aww, well I'm happy i wasn't recommended penn state or something because just because i have a 28 ACT, people tend to downplay my chances when...scores aren't everything. Anyway, I will definently consider those schools. I especially like Brown, Wesleyan, Stanford, Pomona, annndd UPenn. I also love NYU..and have applied there already for transfer. However, I haven't gotten a letter of decision yet so I might have to consider the possibility of staying another year where I am and applying somehwere else...
thanks for all the help!

University of Chicago (easily the best in archaeology), UCLA, UC Berkeley, Michigan, Johns Hopkins, NYU, Penn, Cornell, Yale, Brown, Tufts, Boston U, University of Arizona (it really does have a good program), U Toronto.

isnt U of Chicago a social mindtrap though? i'd rather not die for the sake of archaeology..heh. But thanks for all the suggestions. I'd say I'm leaning most towards NYU, UPENN, Brown, and Stanford right now. What type of area is Tufts in..?

Good point- U Chicago is definitely not for everyone.

Tufts is in Medford, Mass. It's not too far from Boston.

I also forgot to mention Columbia earlier.

look into Johns Hopkins' Near Eastern Studies Department- they send students to Egypt and other places around the globe.

I think I'd choose Columbia over NYU though

Oh wait! Duh, I wrote it wrong. i meant, I like NYU better. But hey--Columbia has its perks too. Different atmosphere

A student I know with your interests looked very hard at Vanderbilt this year.
