Hello,
I’m currently a junior trying to start a list of schools that offer both fine/studio art programs as well as history programs. Funnily enough, I’m not exactly interested in art history. My plan is to major in fine/studio art and either major or minor in history as well.
I have a 3.93 (weighted) GPA and have taken 5 honors classes (including 2 this year). At the moment, I am planning to take 1 honors class and 2-3 AP classes next year. I would prefer schools on the east coast and preferably no further west than the Great Lakes, but I am open to suggestions!
Thank you!
Also I totally forgot to mention this, but my honors classes so far have been English in 9th and 10th grades as well as this year, world history 2 honors in 10th grade, and US history honors this year. I began to become interested in history during my freshman year, and I ultimately decided against APUSH due to the fact that I barely got an A in honors last year and thought that the workload would be too much for me when added to the workload from my other classes (physics, precalculus w/ trigonometry, Spanish 4, studio art 4 portfolio prep, and photography 1).
A strong history department is a hallmark of most (maybe all?) academically rigorous liberal arts programs though the focus and approach may vary. Once you narrow in on the kind of environment you like and the type of studio art program that appeals to you, you won’t have a problem finding a complementary history program.
In addition to thinking about the character of the college or university that suits you – e.g., small/medium/large, urban/suburban/rural, sporty/activist etc. – you should research the difference between getting a BFA or a BA. The latter may give you more flexibility in exploring history or any other discipline.
@merc81, has given you a good starting list. I would also add Wesleyan, Yale, Brown, Conn College. All of these schools also have good to excellent art history programs, in case you change your mind in that respect.
