Any opinions on CS at Wash U in St. Loius or Case-Western?

They both didn't make it to the top 25 at USNews Computer Engineering ranking. I'm not sure about St. Louis, but Case Western seems to be pretty reputable in Engineering. I don't know if that's necessarily the case in CS as well.

One of the problems is that a strength in Computer Engineering is not necessarily a strength in Computer Science. We attended the Harvey Mudd presentation a year ago and learned there were almost no CS majors. And many of the smaller strong east coast engineering schools also seem to mean EECE, not CS. We've tried using Fiske to identify schools that are supposed to have strong CS programs, but it's hard to find info on undergrad anywhere else. Case Western (along with UIUC) are my son's safety schools; dream school is Stanford; other choices CMU, Wash U, MIT, and UPenn.

A friend of mine at WUSTL said that it's ranked at 7 in US News for CS (or maybe CE, I can't remember which).

UT austin would be a good option coz its ranked 7 in computer science and
its business among the top 5 for undergraduate business.I know penn is the best for dual degree program but u can also consider UT austin.

As poinsonedaple said, UT Austin (not WUSTL, but isn't WUSTL more of a liberal arts school anyway?) was the one ranked 7 in USNews Computer Engineering ranking. But once again, as someone else has also said, having a good CE program does not necessarily mean having a good CS program (though I still don't see why).

UT Austin is ranked 7 in computer science as well ,as of the 2006 us news ranking.n it is ranked 5 in undergraduate business also as of usnews 2006

USNews doesn't have a ranking for CS.

yes it has , i saw the ranking. Look at the 2006 usnews magazine carefully

I don't have the 2006 listing but found this online for 2003 CS grad programs. Someone may have confused Wash U and U Wash -WUSTL is tied for 35th and Case tied for 65th. As Illinois residents, UIUC trumps UT Austin. A simplified explanation of the difference between CE and CS is that CE is hardware and Cs is software; of course, a lot more complicated in reality.

Just so ya'll know, the 2006 grad ranking is the same as the 2003 one. They were both conducted in 2002.

if somebody has access to the USnews 2006 undergrad ranking for Computer Science/Computer Engineering can they please post it here

thanks

Um...I just posted it.

Oh, sorry then. =P I'm sure there's some correlation between their grad and undergrad programs though.

Now if somebody could just post the Computer Science rankings that would be really great!

Thanks aibarr!

USNews does not have a ranking system for undergraduate Computer Science. But as I've said before, I don't see why shouldn't the strength in Computer Engineering necessarily imply the strength in Computer Science. Some colleges treat both as the same (or at least, under the same department). In the University of Washington, for example, the department is called "Computer Science & Engineering Department". From what I've heard, it is also the case in both Rose Hulman and Illinois Urbana.

No not true at all. It is the Electrical & Computer Engineering Department. Since CompE is basically EE with CS added in. Again a simplification but oh well. CS is in both LAS and College of Eng but the Eng is reverting to become very similar to LAS with less physics and no diff eq. There is more other types of math that is going to be harder and whatnot.
