What are some good schools in the Journalism track, particularly broadcasting? I know Syracuse and Arizona State has it, but does anyone know any CUNY's or SUNY's, because they offer cheaper tuition for in-state students.

i only know that Northwestern (i think in Illinois) is the BEST.

University of Missouri is supposed to be very good for journalism.

Protip: A lot of pro journalists didn’t major in journalism. Hell, Walter Cronkite didn’t even go to college.

Anderson Cooper went to Yale for Journalism…

I know you didn’t ask for opinions on this, but I should warn you that a journalism degree is virtually worthless.

Take a very close look at Syracuse. There won’t be a need to look elsewhere for journalism

And why is journalism a worthless degree? What is your basis for this comment? Are you a business or employer not hiring journalism majors these days?

It’s not worthless, but some schools require students to double-major if they study Journalism. Common double majors are Politics, Economics, International Affairs, Sociology, etc. The logic behind that is it’s good for journalists to have backgrounds in a field they’re interested in reporting about. You don’t need a journalism degree to figure out how to do research or write an article - pretty much any liberal arts or science major can do that, and work or intern at a newspaper or in publishing to get experience.

Some great journalism programs:
University of Missouri-Columbia
Northwestern
UNC Chapel Hill School of Journalism
U Maryland - College of Journalism
Syracuse - School of Public Communications
U Georgia - College of Journalism and Mass Communication

SUNY-Plattsburgh, SUNY StonyBrook and SUNY-Oswego have Journalism programs. SUNY-New Paltz has a Communication & Media Study program which is similar.

Syracuse is great for broadcast.
Also, Northwestern, Mizzou, and UNC-Chapel Hill have great reputations as far as journalism goes.

If we’re talking about New York schools for journalism, I feel obligated to bring up Ithaca College.

…and now I feel like a dirty pimp.

But trust me, it’s really good. And very hands-on.

(ETA: Anderson Cooper is also a Vanderbilt. I don’t think it’s his degree that got his foot in the door, if you know what I mean.)

Check out SUNY New Paltz for journalism

Anderson Cooper majored in “International Relations” and Poli Sci at Yale, not Journalism:

Alix is very correct, I’d say if you really wanna do well in journalism you gotta find an area that interests you, become a good writer, and meet the right person who can land you a job at a paper/big blog/something.

You could also just sell your soul and do reporting for some big organization (my dad’s a reporter for a world finance bank and makes a handsome income).

I’m actually going to college next year for Journalism, and I live in NY too. I’ve brought it down to SUNY Plattsburgh or SUNY Oswego. Both have seem to have good programs, but I’m leaning towards Plattsburgh due to the feel of the campus and also because it seems like it is a more established journalism department, whereas Oswego is more technical/communications based. Still, its not much of a difference.

I plan to probably go to graduate school and study something related so that I can pursue journalism in a certain area… Of course, I haven’t quite figured that out yet :P.

If I was to transfer and had the money & really good grades, I’d go to Syracuse or UNC Chapel Hill.

I actually got into Ithaca College but it is way too expensive for me… but you should apply there too because it is a very good school as well. If you have the money that is… (or if you get a good financial package).

Hope this helps.

University of Missouri-Columbia has a top journalism school. University of Florida also has a great journalism school.

Northwestern’s Medill School of Journalism is very good and has an amazing reputation. You should definitely check it out if you’re interested in journalism.

Syracuse is absolutely best. The Newhouse school name rings bells and alumni connections are the tightest.

Yea thanks. I’ve had Syracuse on my list the issue with the school is the cost. I will double major but I’m tied between business and journalism I just don’t think I can do both at the same time. It seems like it can be stressful to have both majors.
