Good schools for Microbiology?

I'm having trouble finding schools I like that have microbiology as their major. I live in Ohio. I'm willing to go out of state but stay on the east coast or in the general area, or even in Ohio. BUT I do not want to go to OU or OSU.

University of Florida has a “Microbiology and Cell Science” major, if that interests you…

You’re not going to find a whole lot of schools with microbiology as an undergraduate major. Most people who want to become microbiologists major in biology or biochemistry and then study microbiology in graduate school where it’s an actual major/focus. Any well known, big public research institution will prepare you well enough for graduate study in microbiology, as well as private schools with large endowments who invest heavily in their own research labs.

UCSB has a microbiology major

Do a search on collegeboard.com for schools that offer a major in microbiology (or sometimes, listed as bacteriology). You’ll find quite a few schools that offer a major in it. At some other schools with a biology major, microbiology may be a specialized track within the major. At the undergrad level, you are somewhat more likely to find a specialized major in microbiology at the various landgrant state universities, especially in the Colleges of Agriculture.

The American Society for Microbiology lists curriculum recommendations for microbiology majors here:

I’m a (L&S)Microbiology major at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. The program is ranked no.2 in the country and is extremely rigorous. There is also a Medical Microbiology& Immunology major in the College of Letters&Sciences, if you’re interested in medical research or medical school. If you really are interested in bacteriology, I recommend you come here. It is one of the top ten research universities in the country and your bachelors degree is recognized and respected in the scientific community. Oh yeah, it’s also of of the top five college campuses in the country.
