Good schools for political science?

Hi all,

I am a rising HS senior and I’m looking for what would be considered on here as a more middle of the road small to medium sized school with a good political science/government undergrad. I know most LACs will do for that, but are there any specific ones that come to mind?

To give you an idea of what I am leaning towards, I like UVM and Wheaton College (MA), but really I’m open to anything, anywhere.

I expect to have an SAT of around 1250 and a unweighted GPA of 3.4. Also I am from New England.

Any and all help is appreciated!

Have you discussed budget with your family? Do you qualify for need-based financial aid? Or will you be looking for merit?

What is it you like about UVM and Wheaton?

What is your goal for career? Political office, law, grad school, etc?

Yes, I do qualify for need-based aid, but probably not a ton. Regardless, cost is certainty a factor and I’ll be looking for as much aid as possible.

I like the sizes of UVM and Wheaton more than anything- about as small and as large as I’d want to go in terms of enrollment.

I’m not really working off of much right now, but that’s why I am here…

Thanks so much!

Graduate program could certainly be something I’d want to do (esp. law), but I’m certainty not married to anything at this point. Public policy is another consideration…

thanks

I would take a look at Muhlenberg, Ursinus, Gettysburg, and Allegheny all in PA. I might also look at St. Lawrence, Hobart & William Smith, Union, and Hartwick all in NY.

Cost should be your big criteria. After that, I would worry about overall fit/feel of the college. Unless you are at one of the extremes, the actual Political Science education will be similar. If possible, I would try not to take even the Federal loans.

UVM is cutting a lot of majors - not poli sci but be careful.

College of Charleston - you get an extra $6K if your EFC is under 30K. St. Mary’s of Maryland (it’s public),

Miami of Ohio - but you might not qualify for great aid given your GPA/ACT. Elon - but the aid won’t be there. What is your home state? It’s best to find a college there.

UNC Asheville is a public LAC. The College of New Jersey, Marist, UMBC - this can really go more ways.

Run a NPC at a top school - like Cornell. See what it says - then discuss with your parents and see what you can really afford. There are affordable schools for you that will meet your need, probably in-state public (hence i asked which state).

good luck.

Run the NPC on your state’s flagship: is it affordable?

Run the NPC on…
Kalamazoo
Muhlenberg
St Thomas (MN)
Washington (MD)
Willamette
SUNY Albany
U Southern Maine
