I am looking to attend a relatively selective school in the Northeastern region of the US, and I would love for the school to be in a nice town!

I prefer small schools, but am not opposed to larger schools.

So far, I have liked Bowdoin, Cornell, and UVM. Any other schools with nice towns that I should know about?

Amherst and Hampshire are both in Amherst MA. Also nearby in Northampton is Smith, and Mt/ Holyoke is fairly close. They are part of a consortium along with UMass Amherst so it is easy to travel between them on the shuttle bus.

I happen to think Tufts has a perfect location - a traditional campus but really close to Cambridge and Boston. You can walk to Davis Sq. (or take the shuttle or public transportation) to find tons of restaurants and there you can get on the subway to go into Cambridge and Boston. You can a great view of the Boston skyline from the top of the campus library building. It’s a university yet it isn’t large, only a little over 5,000 undergrads. Most of the graduate programs are on other campuses.
But when you said “town” I was taking that more literally. Tufts is not in a town like Amherst or Bowdoin.

Vassar is in the suburban area of Arlington. Adjacent to campus, there are many small shops and restaurants including Indian, Thai, Italian, Middle Eastern, bakeries, excellent pizza, health food shops, excellent pulled pork burgers and brisket(yes brisket) etc. A Greek diner and an Unos are just 3 blocks away. There is a street fair there once a year and a farmers market weekly in season. 10 minutes away is a major mall and many retail stores. Marist is adjacent to Route 9 just north of Poughkeepsie and has some shopping directly across the street. The Culinary Institute of America is about 1 mile north of Marist - lots of good food in the area!

I agree that Amherst is a great college town and Northampton is just down the road (Yes another route 9!) and is an ecclectic small city also filled with excellent dining options!
