Good Schools in NYC

What are some good schools in NYC? Right now I have Columbia/Barnard on my list. Not NYU though because it doesn't give out enough aid to students.

Class Rank: 4/812
GPA:4.95
SAT: 2300
SAT IIs: US History (770), Math 2 (800)
APs: US History, Calc, Stat, Psych, Econ, Chem, US Gov (all 5s)

ECs:
Odyssey of the Mind Captain
Chinese Club Founder and President
Math League
Science Olympiad
Political Science
Teen Advisory Board President
Church Youth Group Leader
volunteer, research, piano

summers: Geometry (Johns Hopkins CTY), Trigonometry (Johns Hopkins CTY), Calculus II (Lehigh University)

There aren’t really that many strong schools in NYC… but you could add cooper union to your list. Theres also the mccauley honors program, such as for Hunter

Can you tell me how good Fordham is in terms of academics?

You can head north and attend SUNY Geneseo or SUNY Binghamton. These two schools are the most competitive SUNY Schools. Geneseo the public LAC and Binghamton the University.

But are they in NYC?

Fordham is definitely a good school on the rise. It is not at the level of Columbia. Fordham has a beautiful campus in the Bronx, and another one in Manhattan. Historically, Fordham students have had lots of internship opportunities. With your stats you might get a good merit aid package at Fordham. Some folks were discussing Fordham and Holy Cross just the other day: http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/college-search-selection/807458-holy-cross-vs-fordham.html

Not in NYC. The only schools in NYC are NYU, Columbia, Fordham, CUNY Baruch, CUNY Hunter…

NYU is worth a look. With your stats, you might be able to receive some sort of scholarship. It’s worth a shot.

Can you guys please rank all these schools and tell me how much aid I would get at each of them?

Other schools that are almost in NYC are the Stevens Institute of Technology in Hoboken and Sarah Lawrence in Bronxville.

Cooper Union is free if you get in. They have a limited number of programs.

If you have significant need and aren’t interested in what Cooper Union offers, Columbia or Barnard are your best bets. They are also top of the heap academically, followed by Sarah Lawrence and NYU, then Fordham. Stevens and Cooper Union are both technically-oriented. I have no idea how to compare them.

No one can tell you what you will get from a school

Question: would Barnard be a safety or a match?

There are no more schools like Columbia in NYC if that’s what you’re looking for…

From Fordham’s financial aid page:

"Merit Based Scholarships
All candidates for admission will be considered for the following scholarships. The student’s application for admission is also the application for merit based scholarships at Fordham.

Presidential Scholarship
Awarded to the top twenty applicants each year, the Presidential Scholarship includes a full tuition and room scholarship which is renewable for four years. Candidates who typically receive this award are usually ranked number one or two in their high school class, have significant leadership experience, and score within the top 1-2% of all standardized test takers nationally. Notification for this award is on April 1st."

There are also a couple of others on that page. I would think you would have a good shot at this. Although your rank is 4, it is out of 800+ putting you in the top 1/2% of your class.

You look like a shoo in for Barnard and I would agree NYU is worth the applications, they do give some enough money.

NYU does not guarantee 100% need met. However, I know a number of kids for whom NYU gave the most generous financial aid package. They also have merit within need awards. So if your stats are up there, it is worth a try.

There are schools such as New College, Fordham, St Johns, City University, Manhattan Marymount. In the Bronx, schools such as St Vincents, Manhattan, Fordham (Rose Hill Campus). Sarah Lawrence is not far from NYC either. If you go a bit farther out of Manhattan, you can get a number of other schools. With your stats, merit aid is a good possibility.
