We're going on a college visit trip this year, and I really want to visit Rice and Emory, but my dad doesn't want to go because he says it won't be worth it to only see 2 schools, and we should look somewhere else. I think one of these could potentially be the place I ED next year though, so I really want to visit. What are some other good schools near there that we could go visit? I was thinking Georgia tech and University of Texas? Any other top schools that are relatively close?

University of Georgia might be worth a visit.

I’m not sure where you’re from, so I don’t know the route you’d be taking; however, I might suggest the following schools in Texas:

SMU (good match school for a kid with Rice stats – known for fairly generous merit awards)
TCU (see above)
Baylor (see above)
UT
A&M

You could go in this order: TCU (morning) SMU (afternoon) then put up the night in Dallas and enjoy the city. The next morning get up relatively early and stop in Waco to see Baylor on the way to visit UT in Austin. Stay in Austin for your second night (tons of great restaurants and a vibrant music scene). The third day, stop in College Station to see A&M before heading down to Houston to visit Rice. Good luck!

Georgia Tech and Emory are great, but for different majors.

Are you male or female? If by chance you are female, you can check out Agnes Scott. If you have some time to drive, you can drive about 3.5 hrs from Atlanta and check out Vanderbilt.

If you do want to continue the drive, Davidson is not a bad drive from Atlanta and you could hit Furman on the way. Both are right off I-85. For Georgia, it is pretty much Emory, Georgia Tech and UGA for top students. I have heard Agnes Scott and Mercer University offer some good scholarships, but I wouldn’t put them on the same level as Emory and Georgia Tech.

Its at least 4 hrs to Davidson from Atlanta, but it is a good school to check out. Personally, I’d not stop at Furman. Its not on par with the schools mentioned. IMO, either UGA, Davidson or Vandy are the schools to visit if there is time after Emory and Ga Tech. Definitely look at Tech when in town.

As for what is near Rice, I personally love, love LOVE Rice and feel there is not much else nearby to compare.

*** EDIT*** But DEFINITELY go visit Rice. Airfare from Atlanta is pretty reasonable, especially with Southwest starting service soon.

Several hours north, but definitely within driving distance are Furman, Davidson, Wake Forest, Duke. 2 hours from Duke Is William & Mary. These are the most similar schools in the area of Emory.

Duke is a good 6 hr or so drive from Atlanta. Not an easy jaunt from Emory. And W&M is north from there, almost to DC. That is not a hop-skip and jump from Atlanta. That is a serious long haul. OP- where are you travelling from?
