Good Schools that are easy to get into?

Is anybody aware of any good universities to transfer to that have a good philosophy department? And by good i mean a university who may specialize in various types of philosophy, and has been noted nationally or even internationally. Any ideas?

A good school that is easy to get into may be a very different thing from a good transfer-to college/university with a strong philosophy department. Most students would have no difficulty in being able to transfer into a good home-state public U. So, check out your home-state public Us, and see what their philosophy departments look like. This is likely to give you an admissions and financial safety.

Alternately, you can identify strong philosophy programs, and then sort through those institutions to find out which are likely to accept you as a transfer student. I’d suggest you have a sit-down with your current professors, and find out which philosophy programs they are familiar with. Different institutions favor different “flavors” of philosophy. If you have a specific interest in the field, you will want to focus your applications on institutions that have stronger offerings in that sub-area.

Lastly, you need to think about your longer-term goals. Is this degree just a chance to think deep thoughts for four years before going out into the world of work? Is it a pre-law or pre-divinity major? Do you hope to pursue philosophy through the Ph.D. and become a professor one day? If the latter is your goal, you need to be aware that there are more philosophy Ph.D. holders out there than there are job openings. Even being the most brilliant, best prepared, and having the most publications is no guarantee of employment in the field. Be sure to develop some other skills along the way in case you need to take a different kind of job in order to pay your bills.

Wishing you all the best!

Rutgers is known for its good philosophy PHD program, and it’s definitely very easy to get into, but I’m not sure if its undergrad philosophy program is any good.

What are your stats?
