Eastman/Univ of Rochester, NY

University of Denver, Lamont School of Music
University of the Pacific, San Francisco
New England Conservatory if you team up with Tufts/Harvard/Etc.

Of the ones listed above, the Undergraduate Only ones are:
Oberlin, Lawrence, and Anderson

I’m going to stay out of the vocal end of this and let they more informed weigh in, but will speak briefly to the aspects of financial aid.

Talent monies awarded based on audition based admits very simply follow the rule that the bestest get offered the mostest. The amounts range from paltry to substantial, and vary by institution; as noted, some schools are historically stingey, period.

Academic or merit based aid will also vary considerably, and each school handles the mix differently. Some will award academic/merit scholarships in combination with talent based scholarships, some won’t. It’s important to understand the mix, and the details tend to be outlined within the music school or department webpages, not the parent institution’s financial aid links. There may be more money for specific voice types, often program contingent. If you’ve already got one in school, you’re probably aware off the difference between FAFSA and Profile based schools.

For general info, an awards thread is here http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/music-major/458851-music-scholarships-fall-2008-2009-a.html

Mezzo’sMama- Thank you. I was thinking “Case” and typed “Wake”!
One problem with CCM is that hardly anyone gets in.
My daughter though Michigan had a good vocal program. She didn’t apply- too cold and she was ready to change states after 2 years at Interlochen.
She got some merit money from Rice. Lots from IU. Some from Case/CIM. Some from BU but still really expensive.
Tufts/NEC is not very workable. A few get through it but most bail. Hard to get accepted.

Ithaca College, upstate NY.

Regarding Financial Aid: Compare Net Cost to Attend, not just scholarships. Some schools jack up their price, and offer larger scholarships. Net-net, it costs the same.

The UW Madison with tuition reciprocity will be the best voice school for the price. I don’t think Minnesota is as good.

Otherwise, expect to spend at least $25,000/yr, unless she can get great scholarships.

Ithaca is NOT known to be very generous with money, especially in the music dept.It was especially tight this year, and some VP applicants were turned away and shunted into the “undeclared music” major. Wonder if they might be losing or shuffling vocal faculty? Anyone know?

Thank you everyone. We’re adding to and deleting from our list; also changing our minds about our criteria. Also, got the Peterson’s Guide to Performing Arts School (I think a recommendation from Mezzosmama) so we are doing a lot of research.

Franglish - or anyone else - what is your experience with Ithaca?
