Good Schools with Good Financial Aid?

Hi. I am an incoming senior 2015 and was researching good colleges but I wanted to know if any of you know any good colleges that offer good financial aid and merit aid according to my stats:
My stats are:
GPA: 3.957/5.624
SAT: 2150
ACT: 31
AP: World, Psychology, Lang, Cal AB/BC, US HIS, BIO, French, Macro, Lit,
Clubs: French Honor Society (2 years), English Honor Society (2 years), Biomedical Club (2 years) others plus continuing these

Internship at Florida International University in Psychology
150 hours community service church pianist
also hours from internship

I really need the aid because I want to go out of state. If you know any good colleges with good amounts of aid, please list them.

You would qualify for a guaranteed merit award at University of Alabama. Their application is already live, and can be submitted…today.

My major and career goal is psychology but at the same time complete the pre med classes to go to med school.

I don’t think my parents can pay much for financial reasons so I’m hoping for financial aid.

I am not retesting I am happy with my score and my M+CR is my math I got 720 and reading also 720
<<<<<

what is your parents situation? do they have a good income, but cant pay much? if so, then going to a school that gives FA wont help you…your parents would still be expected to pay their EFC or more.

FA is based on NEED after the school looks at your parents income/assets. schools dont care if your parents say, well we cant pay much.

for instance, if your parents earn about 90k per year, but cant pay much, your FA pkg would be short…since the school would expect them to pay about 20k+ per year.

or are they lowish income?

How much can they pay each year? 5k? 10k? more? less? ask them!!!

sounds like you need large merit scholarships. Most of those are based on stats, not income. You have the stats for large merit at some schools.

give us more info.

My dad makes about 79k a year. My mom doesn’t work. They can’t really pay for it so they are hoping I get a merit based scholarship to pay off my college bill. I know I won’t get full aid because he makes 79k which is why I am hoping to get a merit based scholarship. How hard is it to get one? Also I want to go to a good college but also with a scholarship. I know its difficult but not impossible but I was hoping for some suggestions.

Do you think with my stats I have the chance of obtaining one of the competitive merit scholarships from schools like Wake Forest or Northeastern?

at Wake? probably not. You have a 1440, which is about an ACT 32. You’re at the bottom of the upper quartile.
which means that about 20-25% of the frosh class has higher stats.

at NEU? probably not. You arent in the upper quartile, which is 1480+

how much merit do you need?

for you to get substantial merit, you need to apply where your stats are well-within the upper quartile

can you answer the questions that I asked?

I need full merit scholarship. My dad made 79k this year but he can’t really afford to pay those college prices and is hoping for me to get a merit scholarship. What do you mean I am on the lower end? I compared my scores on college board and they were the same range as those who were accepted in the upper percentile. Also, if not those 2, do you know good universities that offer merit based scholarship that I could probably get?

Tulane is generally pretty good although merit scholarships can be competitive

Read the link that Bob Wallace provided upstream.

<<<
What do you mean I am on the lower end?

Your scores are in the lower end of the upper quartile for Wake, and your scores are below the upper quartile for NEU. This is per Collegeboard.

740+ CR
760+ Math
the NEU upper quartile of freshmen have the above stats…per Collegeboard. So, you arent in the upper quartile.

710+
730+
this is the upper quartile for wake, so your 720/720 would be at the bottom of the upper quartile.

You may be confusing acceptances with merit. Yes, you may get accepted, but your stats arent high (merit-wise) for either school…which means that if you got merit, it would be a smallish amount.

so, are you saying that your parents cant pay anything? Nothing?

if so, then forget about looking for FA, you need HUGE merit…that is going to be very hard. Certainly not at the more known/best schools.

what was your PSAT??

I did not qualify for the national merit scholarship I think my past was 1910 I can’t remember.

Is there no way to go to a good school with my stats and get a good scholarship?

Once more…with vigor. Open the link Bob Wallace provided in a post above. It is for guaranteed full tuition/full ride scholarships. You will likely qualify for one if those…at least.

I know I did. But I was hoping for colleges like Syracuse or Tulane I know both offer merit but there’s so many applicants it’s difficult.

Shockwave…you want guaranteed merit aid. What is the matter with the schools on that list? University of Alabama is an excellent flagship university with state of the art programs.

I think you need to open your mind to options other than expensive private universities that do NOT give significant merit awards.

The likelihood that you will get a FULL TUITION scholarship from Syracuse or Tulane is small…very small. The schools give merit awards…but full tuition would be for,the very TOP applicants. And not guaranteed.

I’ve examined everything you are saying myself I just want to know if you believe I have the chance, better yet should apply to schools like this then or just give up on them

<<<
Is there no way to go to a good school with my stats and get a good scholarship?
<<<<

good school, yes. top-ranked schools with a bunch of students with high stats? no. do you think that a top school is going to give big scholarships to most of its students? then who would pay?

schools give big merit to improve their student body in some way…get more students with very high stats, get more URMs, etc.

you’re not going to get full tuition to S or T because those schools target their merit for higher stats.

besides…you need MORE than full tuition if your parents cant pay anything. You would still need another 15k+ to pay for room, board, books, fees, travel, misc…if you get a full tuition award.

How will you pay for those other costs if you do get a full tuition award?

for you to get very large merit (full tuition plus), your stats need to be in the top 2-5% or so of the school. bama is the highest ranked school that for sure would give you free tuition, but that may not be enough if your parents wont pay anything.

So you’re saying I shouldn’t apply to those schools

Shockwave. You need a well balanced list of schools. You need to apply to at least two affordable schools where you are guaranteed acceptance…and where you would attend if accepted. Certainly you can apply to any other schools. But if the money isn’t forthcoming from the schools, you need to be prepared to walk away from those acceptances.

Look again at the link Bob Wallace provided. There are some full rides that you might want to consider. No, they are not to your top choice schools, but the costs would be covered, and some of these are hidden gems.

Bottom line…you have to have a plan for paying the bills for college. You will be able to take $5500 in Direct Loans for your first year.

Have you looked into your own instate public universities? Start there. If there is a school within commuting distance, that will save about $10,000 a year.

Like I said…open your mind to a variety of options. There are schools out there that will be great. You just have to research them.

I’m going to suggest York College in PA. They don’t have guaranteed scholarships, but the school is modestly priced for a private university. And they do offer merit awards (not full rides, but some money).

Can your parents pay anything at all to help you attend college?
