good science/engineering schools

I plan on going to college for science, possibly engineering. Like everyone, I have my dream schools and reach schools. I have started to look for some saftey-ish schools. I feel that I am a fairly competitive applicant, I won't bore you with my stats. Assume that I have test scores within Ivy Leauge midranges, a very rigourous ciriculum, and good extracirriulars and summer activities. My top schools right now are MIT, Princeton and Harvard. I am from MI and I don't want to go out west (CA,TX,WA, etc). Anywhere else i an option.

I have a list of schools that I liked and I am wondering if anyone can rank them wih respect to the quality of the education I woud recieve in the science areas and also very important, what kind of value a degree from the institution would hold in the job market/research oppurtunities.

MIT
Harvard
Princeton
Yale
Haverford
Northwestern (IL)
U of Michigan
Duke
Michigan State
U of Chicago
Wesleyan
DePaul
Tufts
Dartmouth
Purdue
Carnige Mellon
Vanderbilt

I am just trying to narrow down the list :)

You listed pretty much every top school. You would get a top quality science education from any of them. A degree from any of them would hold as much weight in the job market as the others. Research opportunities might be slightly higher at those top 4 due to their outstanding grad schools, but it’s probably a negligible difference. Ranking them seems counterproductive, since the “bottom” of your list would still be an outstanding school. It really comes down to personality and comfort. Do the research, visit the schools, and see which one just feels right for you.

Unless you get a huge scholarship, just go to Michigan. Instate pricing and comparable science and engineering departments to rival or beat most of your listed schools. I would not go to Harvard or Yale if I were considering being an engineer.

yes I agree. If I don’t get into MIT or Princeton, without a great scholarship, I would go to U of M

rjk, why would you not go to Harvard or Yale if you were considering being an engineer?

^^^^Because the OP has better choices for engineering schools that would be less expensive and of a higher caliber.

I understand that some would be cheaper, without a good scholarship, but could you explain how and which schools have a higher caliber?

Take a look at the engineering threads here at CC. Look at the undergraduate rankings of engineering departments offered by the USNWR. That will give you some idea of what I’m talking about.

Universities from your list that are very strong in Engineering AND the Sciences:
MIT
Princeton
Northwestern
U of Michigan

Universities from your list that are very strong in Engineering but not very strong in the Sciences
Purdue
Carnige Mellon

Universities from your list that are very strong in the Sciences but not very strong in Engineering
Harvard
Yale
Haverford
Duke (only in Biology and Mathematics)
U of Chicago
Wesleyan

thanks Alexandre
