good sociology and poli sci school

so the two majors I'm interested in are sociology and political science. anyone know any schools that are good for these majors? I know University of Chicago is good for sociology, but I live in chicago, and I'm pretty sure I want to go east for school. If I do stay in the midwest, I still think I would want to leave Illinois. and I probably want a school with between 1200-6000 students. any suggestions would be awesome. Thanks!!

What stat range?

Every top LAC, the elites, your state U.

Seriously, most schools have good programs in both of those. It really doesn't matter where you go for undergrad because you're going to have to get a graduate degree to do anything significant in those fields anyway.

Well, at the top of the heap I'd suggest Columbia University (the great sociology scholar Herbert Gans may have retired by now), U of Chicago. Unfortunately, some schools minimized or altogether abandoned their sociology departments a few years ago. I believe that this was the case at Washington University-St. Louis, which had a very famous Sociology Department. See for yourself to confirm.

Northwestern University (top 10 in Sociology and top 20 in Political Science)
University of Chicago (#2 in Sociology and #7 in Political Science)
University of Michigan-Ann Arbor (#3 in Political Science and #3 in Sociology)
University of Wisconsin-Madison (#1 in Sociology and top 15 in Political Science)
Washington University-St Louis (top 20 in Political Science and top 20 in Sociology)

didn't Chicago invent the field of Sociology?

Almost every top 20 university has an excellent department in Poly Sci and sociology.

Every elite school will give you a great education in both these fields.

What are your eventual career aspirations?

Check out "new school of social sciences" in NYC. Columbia and Yale are good at sociology as well, and most LAC:s (Oberlin is the one I know for sure has a politically aware atmosphere in general), too.

Typically, any school with overall strong academics will have a good sociology/poli sci department.

If you want to go east, try schools like Brandeis, Fordham, Middlebury, Trinity (CT), Richmond, Wesleyan, Bates, etc. Then Hobart & William Smith and Providence wouldn't be bad for safeties.

And in the midwest, Denison?

thanks everyone! that's really comforting to know that I basically have too many options, not too few.

Alexandre- Where did you find those rankings? I've always looked for those list w/ the best schools for different majors, but could never find them

Bowdoin and Holy Cross-2 great LAC's with strong alumni networks. Both are also SAT optional.

"didn't Chicago invent the field of Sociology?"

No..... but it has the oldest department of...

U Chicago is a great school for poli science.
