Good sophomore SAT/ACT?

1970 (720M, 640R, 610W)

32 (35E, 34R, 30S, 27M)

Got those scores about halfway through sophomore year. What could I hypothetically bring them up to?

That’s very good. With some practice, I’d say at least a 2150 and a 34+

Thanks. ACT math was so bad because I didn’t get to take my sophomore math class until second semester and I took the tests at the end of the first. If only I could change that… Lol.

Yeah I was thinking that’s why the math was so bad because you were probably not done it yet lol. I’m the same age as you from what it sounds like and have only taken the SAT (2020), so how would you compare the ACT to it in terms of difficulty and how easy/hard some sections are? The science and math especially.

I thought that I did worse on the ACT (took it about a month after) because math was obviously hard and the science wasn’t fun. I’m also really bad at essays, which is why my SAT writing is so low lol. I was really surprised by the 32. I was expecting around 27 or 28.

Math was more about trigonometry (sines, cosines, etc.) and moving towards precalculus. A lot of the science is interpreting data, such as graphs and then making a prediction (for example you may get a graph, and then be asked what would happen if a certain variable were to change).

ACT English seriously felt like a cakewalk. I was honestly expecting 34-36 because it was just so easy. I found reading to be a lot easier than the SAT as well. My ACT is equivalent to 2140-2160 on the SAT, just because I was able to do so well on those parts whereas they’re the lowest on my SAT, but I was still good enough at math to get an ok score. From what I can remember, English was almost completely about vocabulary.

Overall, harder math (unless you’ve taken a class, which I unfortunately hadn’t), but much easier reading and English/writing.

I think a 2150 is very realistic if you practice a lot and focus on the ones you have been getting incorrect. Learn to answer some and learn to leave the others blank. Best of luck!

yeah, a 1970 is pretty good sophmore year. i was getting in the 1600’s during sophmore year, but i took a prep class in the summer and got up to a 1900, have about 8wks for the SAT

Thanks for the replies. I’d like to eventually get it over 2200.

I’m actually going on to university this year, so by the time I would normally have been a senior, I’ll have two years of university-level courses under my belt to help me out (I’m looking at you, ACT math lol).

Dude. 2400 and/or 36 is possible for you. Exhaust all your resources. Take the PSAT seriously and look up the cutoff for national merit semi finalist for your state. It really makes a difference when you make the cutoff. Take the sat or act soon, perhaps in November or December of this year (whenever you are ready, depending on school work). just work hard and good luck!

Thanks! I took the PSAT a couple of months before the others and got a 202 (72M, 66CR, 64W).

Pretty good! i recommend reading Wall street journal and new york times to up the cr score. really helped me get ace CR  don’t have to read the boring ones. personally i like the travel ones.

I’m just so much better at math because it’s something definite that isn’t subjective: the correct answer is always the correct answer, no matter what anyone says.

It’s usually the same in writing, but in CR there are so many questions where you can make compelling arguments for a couple of answer choices.

I had a 32 in 10th. Got a 34 in 12th, so you may get similar.

Did you practice and study, or was it just a natural increase?

play devil’s advocate for cr if you can’t decide between 2 answers  If you don’t know what it is just search this forum

Lol good advice. :D

Natural and a bit of practice. My score was a bit lower than it should have been since I’m an exceptionally bad test taker.

Anyway, I just took harder classes and made sure I understood the more complicated material I learned (ability to apply knowledge is probably the most important skill tested on the ACT). I spent more effort trying to understand the literature in English class rather than skimming texts. I started to play chess as well (mostly just chess puzzles). Oh and I programmed a bit, which is very logical.

I basically worked on improving my analytic abilities which has still helped me in college. I’m under the impression that studying for a test specifically isn’t as effective as just being able to apply what you know to a wide variety of situations.

Perfection.

YOU MUST DO PERFECTION.

for what it’s worth, i got a 26 freshman year and a 35 junior year without any prep. i would take it again fall/winter of your junior year and see how your score turns out before worrying about prep!

Wow, Lauren! That’s awesome!!!

feels inspired lol
