Can any of you recommend good speakers for around $50ish for my dorm? Almost every site I've visited lists a bunch of 2.1 systems with subwoofers, but I'm assuming those aren't recommended for college dorms because of noise complaints and stuff.

Just because you have a subwoofer, it doesn’t mean you have to have it cranked up. But it may ultimately be better to have speakers that are elevated a bit from the floor.

What type of size are you looking at? What will you be driving them with? Are you looking at something that can just be connected directly to a laptop/computer?

I’d prefer something at least somewhat portable. I’ll be connecting it to a laptop.

Are you looking for something that you can just plug straight into the headphone jack on your laptop?

If so, Logitech makes really nice computer speakers.

These are fairly well below your price range, but sound quite nice. I used to have a pair that I used with my laptop before I went to a dedicated component system for my computer audio.

For a bit more money, these sound quite nice too. I got my mom a pair of these for Christmas last year, and they sound great.

Those are both fairly portable too. You could easily throw them in a backpack and bring them along with you if needed.

Just be aware that if you’re a bass junkie, these are going to be a bit lacking. They do still have a reasonably healthy bass tone, but they aren’t going to be thumping by any means.

Thanks for the help! After doing a little more research I settled on the Creative Inspire T12: http://www.amazon.com/Creative-Inspire-T12-Multimedia-Technology/dp/B0028N6YH0

I’ll be using it with a 23" monitor attached to my laptop, so I suppose this won’t stand out too much on my desk.

I’ve never heard those ones, but they do look nice. Very well reviewed. I hope you enjoy them!
