Hey,
I am a high school senior going through a LOT of emotional turmoil.
I applied to 20 schools, and have been getting a lot of rejection letters.

Here's my stats..

5APs so far, 3 next year 55554
SAT: 2300, 1500/1600 in reading and math
SAT2: us history 760 math2 770 Chem 760

NSE bronze medal.. If that counts as anything
World concerns conference, tutor a girl from hope house(house for victims of sex trafficking)
Essay: Common app: Good, wrote about what I learned from volunteering at the rubbish heap from one of the kids
Supplementary: Above average, some of them are really good and some mediocre
Rec Letters: Awesome! My teachers actually wanted me to read it.

Now onto the fun part....
Accepted; UNC, Case Western Reserve University
Rejection: Middlebury, Vassar, Colgate, Carleton, Wellesley, Grinnell
Waitlisted: WUSTL, Davidson, Macalester, Oberlin,
Waiting: Pomona, Cornell, Duke, Dartmouth, Amherst, Johns Hopkins, Vanderbilt

WHY am I rejected/ waitlisted at so many schools that I have considered as match/low match?

PS I am international student and I did ask for FA. That's why I applied to so many LACs.

That you are an international student with need is why your are rejected at so many schools. Process is not need blind for you at most schools. Due to needing money, all US schools are a reach for you that do not have guaranteed merit with your stats. That you’ve been accepted to two very good schools is a great result. COngrats. It’s very difficult for international students with need to get accepted as you cannot come here without showing you can pay since you have to do this to get your student visa. If a school can’t meet your need, they will reject you because they know you can’t possibly come here. They pretty much HAVE to guarantee your need in order for you to get that visa. That’s a high bar.

Reasons:

It’s extremely difficult to write excellent supplemental essays for 19 schools.

Read at least some of this thread. <a href=“Why do seemingly perfect students get rejected from Ivies? - College Search & Selection - College Confidential Forums”>http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/college-search-selection/1626413-why-do-seemingly-perfect-students-get-rejected-from-ivies-p1.html

But in essence, your supplements, international asking for FA, the likelihood that these schools count demonstrated interest as part of admissions criteria (making it doubly difficult for internationals to get in), and the fact that there are just too many good applicants and not enough spots for all of them at the top schools.

I reused a lot of my supplementary essays and tried to show interest in each school. I guess it was not enough. :(

If your Amherst supplement was good, you have a chance to receive better news from them, as they are need blind. Same goes for Dartmouth.
Grinnell seems to have been quite need-sensitive this year: one guy from my country(already accepted to a top 10 school) was rejected, and you won’t believe how great EC’s he has. He did require a lot of aid, though, so…

Reusing anything is not exactly a good idea I’m afraid

Did you keep up contact with your regional admission rep?
Are you from a country where many internationals come from?
Was your essay very sincere and really conveyed your voice?

These might also be issues in international student admissions.
