What have you as a current student at BS (or alum or parent of a BS kid) found to have been a good study habit(s) and time management skills to handle the workload at school? Any tips/advice you would give to prospective students as to how they'd maneuver the large amount of homework and still enjoy their boarding school experience as well as their extra-curricular's?

my friend at SPS says to really take advantage of study halls and excess time. its also good since everyone has a lot of hw so they all need to focus on it.

Study hall, xbox only on weekends and flash cards during lunch.

Use extra time besides study hall to work on homework. Don’t have a lot of distractions out during study hall such as phone…computer…etc. Don’t stay up late doing homework because you will only be more tired in the morning.

My d says she used her free time during the day to get work done. After dinner she doesnt wait until study hours to begin work. She tries to get to assignments early so if she needs help she isnt pressed at the last minute.

My d works a couple of hours over the weekend. If she used her time well, she is able to go to bed earlier than most. After having days that start at 530Am-and not arriving home at nites until 10pm, she values her undisturbed sleep at bs. (She sleep well most nites from 11p-7:30a).

Ditto on Alex’s daughter for my son, though he works more than a couple hours on the week-end; generally, he uses week-ends to work ahead on papers or start studying for tests later in the week, to take some of the pressure off when the week gets busy. I think one key is to try to stay ahead of the game, rather than putting things off–jump on the paper as soon as it’s assigned, for example, then pick away at it slowly over a series of days.

Go ahead you two, rub it in. ;)

Just re-reading “A Separate Peace.” You sure those kids aren’t jumping out of trees during the night?" ;)

Definitely agree with the comments on using free time during the day and after dinner before studyhall. Sundays are when DD writes papers. Another often overlooked chunk of time is the bus ride to away games. She naps on the way there and then reads ahead in her novel for English on the way home.

Neato: If only I could say he had inherited those good time management skills from me… :)

classical-I ditto you…is that why I am still grading papers from week 3 in week 6—lol.

Hmmm… I’m quite sure our guy inherited his procrastination skills from me!

Ditto Mainer95 - I see too many of my academic habits in my son.

However, he is learning how to keep a plan book, how to ‘back plan’ major assignments and utitlize the resources - such as teacher conferences. He is still reluctant to give up his ‘free’ time to study on the weekends…
