Good Study Music

What are some good songs that will help me study for finals? Right now I am listening to the Donnie Darko soundtrack...any more kind of songs like the ones from Donnie Darko? Nice, depressing, and study-inducing?

I find music that I regularly listen to helps me the best. Because those songs are already programmed into my head, my brain devotes less time to listening and more to studying, while I can still enjoy the beat.

I can't listen to anything with words when I study.

I either listen to instrumental jazz, Christopher O'Riley (he does a lot of piano covers of Radiohead and Elliott Smith, fantastic), or Sigur Ros. Sigur Ros has words, but you can't really understand what they're saying unless you know Icelandic or Hopelandic, and the music just has a calming vibe to it.

I stick with classical (especially Tchaikovsky and any piano music), but they're not too depressing.

i agree with above, Tchaikosky's pieces do help me a lot to concentrate. I recently also found that Debussy's Clair de Lune very soothing.

ambient and downtempo

Nature sounds. Bizarre I know.

exactly the same with me, at least when i'm reading (math, anything goes)...and the Christopher O'Riley's covers are nice. interesting story...my friend, a viola major here, actually played with with him when NPR was showcasing young classical talent.

while i try to avoid words, i also try to avoid things that might put me to sleep, which is why i avoid Sigur Ros :p i try to listen to mentally stimulating classical (vs. what i feel is "emotionally stimulating"), so baroque or 20th century...Bach's Partitas and Cello Sonatas, Schnittke's quartets, Britten's sonatas, etc.

Yo-Yo Ma

+chars

Elliott Smith, Christopher O'Riley's covers, Sigur Ros... I've finally met someone with similar music interests

I like some Enya and Sigur Ros during study time. Sometimes Imogen Heap, String Cheese, and for some reason, The Fray also.

trance and stuff by Chicane

classic rock...haha yeah i know its not classical or very calming, but its a fun, up-beat tempo that sorta motivates me, and classic rock is basically the mellowist type of rock...frankly, id go for anything that isnt rap/R&B/today's hits (then you're singing along and it can distract you, or bring up more recent memories and thoughts), and at the same time, something you're familiar with and like...if you dont listen to the type of music often (say, you listen to rock/pop and dont really like classical, then you're going to spend your entire time clicking through because you find the songs boring) or dont like it, it will distract you more...also, try to match songs that are similar in type/tempo, because if you get a fast song, then a slow song, then a country song, it will be more likely to distract you
classic rock just happens to be easy going yet doesnt make me want to fall asleep..=P

If you're looking for similar music try using Pandora internet radio (pandora.com)
It uses the music genome project to identify similarities between songs to suggest new ones that you may like. I'm not a big jazz fan, but it's supposedly phenomenal for that. I've gotten some great suggestions for other stuff I like.

As for me, I'm into more uptempo stuff so I've been listening to Doves, the Walkmen, Sublime, and even stuff like My Chemical Romance. The Killers' new CD is pretty good study music for me.

I listen to the Red Hot Chili Peppers...mostly their more mellow stuff, but pretty much all of it works well for me.

my study mix tends to be the fray, josh groban, and norah jones....

....but that doesnt sound like what you're looking for. I'd suggest pandora as well.

Edith Piaf has been my singer of choice lately

The movie soundtrack to Titanic is my favorite study music.

Yanni works for me, as do most musical soundtracks, and strangely enough, opera.

Good sleep music--he's not known as Yawni for nuttin'

Sigur Ros, yes, but also other Post-Rock bands such as Explosions in the Sky, Godspeed You! Black Emperor, and Do Make Say Think.
