Good Testing Plan?

I am thinking about taking the ACT in terms of college admissions. I like the format better than the SAT and overall think this is a better fit for me. I took the PLAN last year so I have an idea of what I need to improve on this year. My plan right now is to take the February ACT. If I start studying before this month ends, that would be about two and a half months to prepare. I have a fee waiver however the state I live in will be doing a mandatory free ACT for all the juniors in my state on March 3. Assuming I get my scores back the earliest day possible, without writing, that would give me about two weeks to brush up before the state given ACT.

Am I giving myself a reasonable time range to study and get back scores or should I just go with the March testing date instead of February? How much time did you spend prepping for any major test you've taken? Was it enough?
My main thing is that I'm also planning on taking two Subject Test in the spring that relate to my AP exams content wise. I don't want to be studying for too much at once if I do end up needing to take the ACT over.
