Good theater programs that don't require an audition?

I come from a small high school of about 150 and haven't really been involved with theater. I haven't had time, because my school requires one sports season per year, and my sport is in the winter, when the school always does the play... so I can't do it.

So, now, I'm feeling terrible, because I love acting... and I've been toying with the idea of double majoring in Theater and something else or minoring in it... but I'm really lacking on the experience.

So, my question is, are there any schools that have relatively good programs that don't require an audition?

I was thinking that if I could go to a school that didn't require an audition, then I could build up experience and apply as a transfer to a school with a better program later.

Or is it too late for me to begin acting again?

It is not too late at all. What you should do is attend a school with a BA degree that offers a Theater Major. Most have no specific requirements to get in for theater and you can declare your major later, as with any major. There would not need to be a transfer later. Many BA programs offer great theater.

I second Soozievt’s advice. No need to transfer unless you do not like the school you end up attending. If you decide that you want more professionally focused training after obtaining your BA you can look into MFA programs and/ or 2-year conservatory programs.

There are MANY schools that offer BA Theatre programs that do not require an audition. In order to get suggestions it would help if you would share stats, size of school you would like to attend, location that interests you, etc…

Hmm… Well I’ve been thinking about either going to school in California, South Carolina, or the Northeast (DC area and up). It can’t be anything too selective, because my uw GPA is 3.0 and my SAT is 1230.

Thanks for the suggestions. We actually have a school in my city that offers Theater as a BA, but I’m not sure if I want to go there, because it’s all girls and maybe a little too close to home. It’s typically regarded as a very artsy college with really good art and music programs… so I think their theater department is good. But how would that do with being all girls?

I’m going to meet with my guidance counselor before school starts and see if I can finagle my way into the drama class. I’m not sure if it is possible, because I have to make an academic AP class an independent study… but hopefully I’ll be able to.

I, too, would be interested in some BA programs that are non-audition for my daughter. Is there a place to find a list. I found the list in musical theater but it must not include non musical theater programs. I believe SMU BA is non-audition but it was not in MT list. Thanks for your replies.

AUGirl - Since you are in Sout Carolina you should take a look at Coastal Carolina. While their BFA majors (Acting/Physical Theatre/Musical Theatre) require an audition, the BA in Dramatic Arts does not. There is a dedicated Coastal Carolina forum on the Musical Theatre forum if you want to take a look. The poster kjgc is the head of the theatre program and is very helpful. My D is getting ready to leave to begin her freshman year at CCU and she couldn’t be more excited. Best of luck in your search!

It doesn’t surprise me that they have a good music theater program… The girl who plays Elle Woods on Broadway went to Coastal. XD But I never put two and two together.

Do they have a good regular theater program? I am a horrible singer and have no quality what-so-ever. I mean, I can sing if forced, and I can read music… but singing just is not my thing.

Thanks for the suggestion. I’ll look into it.

One of the things my D loved when she visited was the acting class she sat in on. So it is not all about musical theatre. They have the new Physical Theatre degree which is 3 years at CCU with a 4th year at the San Francisco Circus Center’s Clown Conservatory. Lots of options at CCU. And they have a partnership with Atlantic Stage, which is a local professional company. CCU students audition for Atlantic Stage and do get cast there so that’s another performance opportunity.

BA programs you might want to look into include Skidmore and Muhlenberg.

I’ll check those out. Thanks. =)

Does anyone have any information on the Theater program at Converse College in South Carolina? They’re an artsy type of school with several BFA degrees, though they only offer a BA in Theater… Does it matter if it’s at an ‘artsy’ college?

I am pretty sure that SMU Theatre is BFA only and audition only.

^^^ That is correct.

I’ve read in a couple of places that American University has a good BA program in acting… Is this true?

It’s been my number one school choice since 10th grade, and I’ll probably be applying there early decision this year. It’d just be even more amazing if they have a good acting program. lol

Please be aware that American’s BA program in Acting is by audition only. I’m just pointing that out since the topic of this thread is programs that do not require an audition.

Ah. I see that now. Thanks for pointing that out.

When I looked at their website, it did say that you could enter the school as an intended major and later audition. Does anyone know about this? My real problem right now is that I’m lacking on experience, so if it is possible for me to go in undecided and then audition, then that would be helpful and at least give me a shot.

Does anyone know if Drew University requires an audition for entrance into their theater program? I’ve been looking at their website and I can’t seem to find anywhere where it says they do…

Drew does not require an audition. You can submit a DVD to be considered for an arts merit award.http://www.drew.edu/depts/finaid/arts.aspx

There is no audition required to join the theater department at Drew. I have many friends who are theater majors and minors and some who are neither, but get involved with the department anyway. You will, however, have to do a little bit of everything at Drew. It’s not just an acting program.

I think I just sent you an email about Wofford College in Spartanburg, SC, but let me know if it didn’t work! (I’m not good with technology, haha.)

I didn’t get an email.

But… I’ve never heard about Wofford and theater. They don’t seemingly go together… lol. And I’m just thinking about productions too… I’ve never heard of a play at Wofford. =/

EDIT: Actually… I just did a search in my email and I did get an email. I don’t know how I missed it.
