Many smaller schools have good programs for non-majors; they don't have enough majors to cast all their shows. Also, many schools that don't have theater majors at all (maybe a minor, maybe not an academic program) can have excellent theater.

Hollyert: Vassar has an outstanding program. The casting for plays is very, very competitive, as there are so many talented kids who are interested in theater. One does not have to be a theater major or minor to participate.
Johns Hopkins has an absolutely wonderful program. The head of the department is John Astin, the actor/director. You may know him as Gomer Adams of the Adams' Family movies. He is the father of Sean Astin, the actor. Classes with him are wonderful. There are also many opportunities to perform at Hopkins. Great program.

Northwestern has one of the largest pre-professional theatre majors in the country, and it would be hard to break into departmental productions. It has outstanding student-run productions as well, but the majors compete for those roles too. Many of the Ivies have very strong student-run theatre. For what type of school and level of selectivity are you looking?

well, pretty selective schools. Honestly, I've just had my perspectives turned upside down by a road trip in terms of size but just to give an idea, my dream school as of the minute is Rice...
