If you want to have a tv/media career, what schools would you recommend looking at?

If you can handle the religious atmosphere, BYU has a strong program:

Northwestern Journalism, Ivys for media.

Northwestern for both- Medill for Journalism, Communications for Radio/TV/Film

Syracuse
Northwestern
Oklahoma
Indiana

Also Qunnipiac, SUNY Oswego and Marist.

I've heard Northwestern and Syracuse are both excellent journalism schools and those are the ones I am looking into.

Take a gander at Arizona State U - Walter Cronkite School of Journalism and Mass Communication

Northwestern and Syracuse are tops, along with USC.

ASU is solid as well, worth looking at.

Then I'll also add to the list American U; their internship opportunities are really strong. I was considering going there back when I wanted to do broadcast.

If you're good, it really doesn't matter as long as you go to an accredited program. There are so many highly respected media members who attended colleges that would not be considered "elite."

Something like David Letterman and Ball State comes to mind, though there are plenty of others.

^^^ ehh... the top schools are much better at placing students in top internship programs so i don't know where you heard that.

speaking for medill (northwestern), they have spots at publications and broadcast firms where they literally just "send" students.

The below is what has be compile thus far:

Northwestern
Syracuse
Arizona State
American
Indiana
Ball State
BYU
Oklahoma
USC

Keep the recommendations coming, thanks

Washington State University, which also has a good Honors Program.

The University of Missouri-Columbia has one of the best j-schools in the country.

I forgot Mizzou. Excellent.

American has a good journalism program, but they're more about politics than sports.

How about Boston Universtiy and UNC-Chapel Hill?

UNC is strong.

BU is overrated. It's okay, but you can get a much better education for the money elsewhere, IMO.

Emerson College.

Mizzou is the number one J-school in the country. Check out course offerings at all the J-schools(go to a school with a J-SCHOOL, not just a J-program)and see which offers the most courses in what you are interested in. My D got her decision down to 2 schools and found one had TWO magazine classes in total, where Mizzou has several MAJORS in the magazine area. The programs were not comparable at all for what she was interested in.

Syracuse has arguably the best broadcast journalism program around. Mizzou is up there, but they are stronger in print than they are in broadcast. Northwestern also has a good overall reputation when it comes to journalism. Basically, Syracuse, Mizzou, and Northwestern are the top 3 in the country for communications (the order of those three is subject to plenty of debate!).

I'm only really experienced with Syracuse's journalism school, but I can tell you that their strengths are in broadcast and magazine journalism. Their magazine journalism program is excellent, and having a degree from SU's Newhouse goes a long way at the big-time magazine publications in NYC, believe me. Also, ESPN and other TV networks seem to gobble up Newhouse graduates as soon as they are available!
