I'm trying to expand my options, any schools other than UIUC, UMich, UC Berkeley, MIT, Carnegie, that have a great computer science program? Thanks in advance.

I would definitely add Georgia Tech and Stanford to that list. Look into Rice as well!

Have you run the net price calculators at each school to see if they are financially realistic?

Less expensive out-of-state public schools include Minnesota, Virginia Tech, Stony Brook, and Cal Poly SLO.

I’m not applying to all the schools I listed. I’m just trying to get a general idea of schools that have great CS programs, the ones I named are the ones I’m already aware of.

Brown has a highly-regarded CS program that can be combined with a couple of other majors: CS/math, CS/applied math, and CS/economics. Google, Apple, Microsoft and various major consulting firms hire quite a few graduates every year. My son’s faculty advisor taught many of the people at Pixar as well as other industry leaders.

Note that the big well known computer companies tend to recruit widely. It is the smaller companies and startups that are more likely to focus on local schools and a few non-local “good for CS” schools that they know about. (Yes, Berkeley and Stanford have a double advantage of being both well known for CS and being near Silicon Valley and its collection of startups and small companies.)

Rice
UT Austin
UWashington

Since OP resides in the Midwest, I would suggest tOSU as best value option in terms of Academics + Athletics + Scholarships (National Buckeye Scholarship) for OOS Students.

Best of Luck & Go Bucks!! :)

Cornell has an outstanding program. Bill and Melinda Gates Hall is currently being built on campus to house the computer science department.

Cornell, Duke, UT Austin, Washington, Stanford, Berkeley, and CMU

^^^ I would add to that list the ff schools:

MIT, Michigan, Caltech and Harvey Mudd.

I will replace Duke with Brown.

Seriously, Duke’s comsci program is no match to MIT, Stanford, Berkeley, CMU and Caltech’s.

This topic comes up all the time. Search for other threads on this topic to get more opinions.

LOL at Ohio State being mentioned.

informative - Ohio State is the answer, no matter what the question is, Ohio State is the answer ;-)

Your jealousy towards Duke shows. It may not be as good as those 5 but is certainly as good as Brown and Michigan. Its very undergraduate focused too with a lot of grant money that is available to undergraduates.

^^^ I’m sorry, but I see it the other way around. I think you are over-rating, over-hyping Duke and is putting it in a place where it obviously does not belong. Both Brown and Michigan have a stronger comsci program than Duke’s. Both Brown and Michigan have also enough money to operate their comsci program. I have no reasons to be jealous here.
